An ihrer Stelle steht - der Aufsatz legt es an einer Reihe von Beispielen dar - ein System von Über- und Untertreibungen, in dem Hochwertiges in seinem Ansehen vermindert und Geringes aufgewertet wird. Damit wird die Wirklichkeit zwar wohl karikiert, aber nicht 'verletzt.' Das ist zugleich der Grund, warum Thomas Manns Werk realistisch wirkt.
N2  - Irony as a rhetorical device to express the reverse of what is meant does not occur in Thomas Mann's work. The article shows that instead overstatement and understatement are systematically employed to downgrade that which is normally held in high esteem and to upgrade that which normally seems rather unimportant. This method tends to caricature reality but it does not falsify it, which is why Thomas Mann's work nevertheless gives a realistic effect.
