N2  - The history of the string quartet as a musical genre between 1830 and 1870 is the focus of this book. Using the musical developments throughout Europe as a framework, the history of string quartet composition as well as aspects of the concurrent social history are explored. Also included are a detailed analysis and discussion of the general discourse concerning musical genres during this time period. Further discussions clarify issues of music historiography and the historiography of musical genres.
