N2  - In Apollodorus of Damascus’ description of the ram (Πολιορκετικά 158, 5-9), both mechanical and textual considerations support the restoration of the transmitted reading παρὰ μέρος against Schneider’s emendation παράμεσος, which has been until now accepted by scholars. On the basis of a comparison between ram and balance, some technical aspects of the former are then discussed.
