  • The Green Ash has become naturalized in the Mainspitze area near Ginsheim-Gustavsburg (Hesse), and now inhabits an area of about 4 ha. The occurrence of plants of all age categories indicates that the population has existed for a long time; older trees, some of which have already died, co-exist with numerous younger trees. The habitats have been impacted by anthropogenic activity: the flood plain of the Main river has been altered by excavation and accumulation, and supports a fragmentary riverine forest, and the bank slopes, together with a strip of land alongside and under a railway bridge, have been consolidated with blocks of stone. The indigenous Fraxinus excelsior is almost absent where the north American species is present, but is widely distributed in the surrounding areas. The taxonomy of the Green Ash is discussed. Green and Red Ash (F. pennsylvanica s. str.) behave as geographically distinct races in North America and are therefore best considered as subspecies. This situation therefore requires a new combination: F. pennsylvanica subsp. novae-angliae (Wesmael) Buttler, combinatio nova.
