Soil nutrient contents and supply of (partly ruderalized) pioneer vegetation and grassland on sandy soils in the region of Darmstadt-Dieburg

  • On sandy soils in the region of Darmstadt-Dieburg (south Hesse, Germany) sixteen plots of pioneer vegetation (Spergulo-Corynephoretum, Bromo-Phleetum) and grassland (Jurineo-Koelerietum, Allio-Stipetum, Poa angustifolia-stand) were examined with regard to soil-nutrient content and supply. The soils of these sand ecosystems are poor to medium in humus content, poor to very poor in total nitrogen, nitrate and ammonium (CaCl2 extract), as well as in phosphate (Calcium Acetate Lactate extract). Seasonal variation of soil variables and the im portance of the lower soil horizon were investigated in the Poa angustifolia-stand. In the course of succession on calcareous sand from pioneer vegetation to closed grassland a 3-4-fold accumulation of humus and total nitrogen takes place, due to reduced sand movement (consolidation) and increasing production of litter. The nitrate content of the soils increases, too (but not the ammonium or phosphate content). The nitrogen turnover rate drops proportionally. This is a transition from an "open" to a "closed" ecosystem type. On lime-poor sand the soils of the pioneer vegetation (Spergulo-Corynephoretum) are highly to medium acidic, and nitrification is lower (but still high), compared to calcareous, non-consolidated sand. Regarding other variables, no significant differences could be detected. Despite low nutrient contents and pools, nitrogen is subject to a rapid turnover, especially in non-consolidated soils. Nitrogen net mineralization was found to be relatively high, giving no reason to believe there is a nitrogen limitation. The total atmospheric nitrogen deposition constitutes an important, additional nitrogen source. Its possible impact on vegetation is discussed in view of “ruderalization” (increase in plant species occurring mainly at ruderal sites). In five stands two directly adjoining plots with different degrees of ruderalization were com pared. One of the ruderalized plots shows extraordinary high phosphate content (probably caused by deposition from neighbouring fields). All ruderalized plots are distinguished by their higher nitrate content and nitrogen mineralization rates from their controls. The highly ruderalized stand of Poa angustifolia is characterised by a very high mineralization, whereas other variables are not conspicuous. Our study provides no evidence for a generally lacking potential for conservation of sand ecosytems, but further investigations are required.
