Morphometric investigation of a contact zone between Carabus (Megodontus) violaceus and purpuraseens (Coleoptera, Carabidae) in south-west Lower Saxony

  • Among 9 exoskeletal characters investigated, the end of the aedeagus and the sculpture of the elytra show a strong differentiation between populations of both forms sampled in regions far away from a contact zone (populations studied: purpurascens from the Pyrenees and Normandy, violaceus from northern and north-eastern Germany, Poland and Romania). In south-west Lower Saxony, populations of both forms as weil as such characterized by intermediate values of the aedeagus and the elytron sculpture have been detected, indicating a hybrid zone in the study area. For a more exact description of the hybrid zone in south-west Lower Saxony (e.g. geographic dimensions) and of other contact zones, the two differentiating characters should be analyzed in additional populations. Nonetheless the violaceus populations, which are isolated and partly surrounded by purpurascens ("Eifel", Black Forest), indicate that both taxa form a mosaic hybrid zone in Central Europe. The postglacial population history of both taxa and of the hybrid zone is discussed.
