• Im westlichen Teil des Ballungsraumes Ruhrgebiet hat sich trotz der Flächenansprüche seit der Industrialisierung ein großflächiges Altwaldgebiet mit einer Vielfalt unterschiedlicher naturnaher Waldgesellschaften erhalten. Im Rahmen einer floristisch-vegetationskundlichen Untersuchung dieses „Duisburg-Mülheimer Waldes“ wurden schwerpunktmäßig die Birkenbruch- und Erlenbruchwald-Bestände bearbeitet (FUCHS 2003). Das Carici elongatae-Alnetum muss als durchweg gestört betrachtet werden, weist aber im Gegensatz zum Birkenbruch ein erstaunlich vollständiges Artenspektrum auf. Deutlich lässt sich ein nährstoffarmer Flügel als Carici elongatae-Alnetum betuletosum pubescentis, ein nährstoffreicher Flügel als C.-Al. iridetosum sowie das C.-Al. cardaminetosum auf quelligem Standort abgrenzen. Das Betuletum pubescentis ist aktuell im Untersuchungsgebiet lediglich als Fragmentgesellschaft vorzufinden.Vor dem Hintergrund der Beeinträchtigungen und Belastungen durch den Ballungsraum werden der Zustand, das Potenzial und die Entwicklungstendenzen der Birken- und Erlenbruchwälder diskutiert. Mit der teilweisen Wiedervernässung und einer gezielten Besucherlenkung wird es für möglich gehalten, den Status quo der Birkenbruchwälder zu stabilisieren und den Zustand der Erlenbruchwälder zu verbessern. Auf diese Weise könnten auf lange Sicht die Birkenbruch- und Erlenbruchwälder für den Ballungsraum Ruhrgebiet erhalten werden.
• In the western part of the densely urbanised Ruhr Basin, a large area of ancient forest with a variety of different native woodland communities has persisted, this despite the fact that large parts of this area have been taken over in the course of industrialisation. In the framework of a broader floristic-phytosociological study of this area, termed the Duisburg-Mülheim Forest, special emphasis was placed on stands of birch and alder swamps (FUCHS 2003). The association Carici elongatae-Alnetum can be viewed as predominantly disturbed, but unlike birch swamps it still supports an surprisingly complete species spectrum. The association can be clearly divided into a nutrient-poor subassociation Carici elongatae-Alnetum betuletosum pubescentis, a nutrient-rich subassociation iridetosum and the subassociation cardaminetosum on spring-fed sites. The association Betuletum pubescentis is currently to be found in the study area only in the form of a fragmentary community. The condition, potential and developmental tendencies of the birch and alder swamps are discussed against the background of the impacts and strains placed upon these habitats by increasing urbanisation. With the partial reestablishment of waterlogged soils and a focused programme of diverting visitors away from sensitive sites, it is believed to be possible to stabilise the status quo of the birch swamps and to improve the condition of the alder swamps. This could facilitate the long-term maintenance of birch and alder swamps in the otherwise densely urbanised Ruhr Basin.
