• Je geringer, umso besser – gemeint ist die Entfernung zum Handlungsort eines Werkes, falls der Schriftsteller ihn nicht in seiner Heimat platziert. Für einen Dichter deutscher Zunge bestand kaum ein Grund, der Slowakei Aufmerksamkeit zu schenken. Zu einer intensiveren, für beide Seiten unheilvollen Berührung beider Länder kam es erst im Herbst 1944, als die deutsche Wehrmacht sich daran machte, die Slowakei zu besetzen und den Aufstand, der Ende August ausbrach, niederzuschlagen...
• When the German Wehrmacht began to occupy Slovakia in 1944, a German ally until that point, the contact between the two countries intensified. In response, the Slovak National Uprising broke out in late August. The first books whose authors dealt with this experience were published mostly in Eastern Germany (GDR) fifteen years after the war. The article discusses the partially forgotten works of A. Müller, W. Schell, H. Friedrich, but also those of important GDR writers J. Brežan and D. Noll, associated with the poetry of so-called Socialist Realism unlike a novel by W. Heinrich, a then-popular West German author of light fiction. The lack of knowledge about the country and its inhabitants is revealed (especially in Heinrich’s work), but no antagonisms towards the local society are present. Ultimately, both countries remained strangers.
