• Im nordrhein-westfälischen Teil der Eifel (nördliche Eifel) tritt das Galio odorati-Fagetum Sougnez & Thill 1959 (Waldmeister-Buchenwald) vor allem in Silikat-, seltener auch in Kalkgebieten auf. Seinen Schwerpunkt besitzt es dort, wo unterdevonische Schiefer und Grauwacken von pleistozänen Hoch­flächenlehmen und Solifluktionsdecken überlagert werden. Die Bestände werden anhand von pflanzen­soziologischen Aufnahmen nach BRAUN-BLANQUET dokumentiert und differenziert. Das Galio-Fagetum unterscheidet sich vom Luzulo-Fagetum (Hainsimsen-Buchenwald) durch eine ganze Reihe von Trennarten, größere mittlere Artenzahlen, höhere durchschnittliche Deckungsgrade der Krautschicht und einige feinere floristische Merkmale. Im Untersuchungsgebiet sind zwei Subasso­ziationen des Galio-Fagetum anzutreffen, das anspruchsvollere Galio-Fagetum typicum und das zum Luzulo-Fagetem überleitende Galio-Fagetum luzuletosum. Diese lassen sich weiter untergliedern in eine leicht verhagerte wechseltrockene Flieracium sylvaticum-Variante, eine frische Typische Variante bzw. Hordelymus europaeus-Variante, eine sickerfeuchte Dryopteris filix-mas-Variante und eine stau- bzw. wechselfeuchte Deschampsia cespitosa-Variante. Anreicherungsstandorte mit dicker Fallaubdecke sind durch Massenbestände von Festuca altissima gekennzeichnet. Ferner läßt sich eine collin-submontane Form mit Rubus fruticosus agg. von einer montanen Form mit Polygonatum verticillatum unter­scheiden. Geographisch können die Bestände des Galio-Fagetum innerhalb der subatlantischen Ilexaquifolium-Rasse der nordmitteleuropäischen Melica uniflora-Ausbildung zugeordnet werden.
• In the northern (Nordrhein-Westfalen) portion of the Eifel mountains, the Galio odorati-Fagetum Sougnez & Thill 1959 em. Dierschke 1989 (Woodruff-Beech woodland) grows on calcareous and sili­ceous rocks. Its most extensive stands are on base-rich diluvial silt deposits and solifluction blankets overlying slates and greywackes from the lower Devonian. The Woodruff-Beech woodland is docu­mented and differentiated by phytosociological relevés according to BRAUN-BLANQUET. The Galio-Fagetum can be distinguished very well from the Luzulo-Fagetum Meusel 1937 (Wood- rush-Beech woodland) by several seperating species, a higher coverage in the herblayer, more species, and some subtle floristical characteristics. Two subassociations of the Galio-Fagetum appear in the northern Eifel, the more base-demanding Galio-Fagetum typicum and the less base-demanding Galio-Fagetum luzuletosum. Within these sub­communities four distinct variants exist: the Hieracium sylvaticum variant on somewhat wind-exposed sites, the typical variant or Hordelymus europaeus variant on fresh soils, the Dryopteris filix-mas on variant moist seepage soils, and the Deschampsia cespitosa variant on slightly damp soils. Accumulation sites with thick layers of organic matter are dominated by Festuca altissima. Further on, a colline-submontane type with Rubus fruticosus agg. can be separated from a type with Polygonatum verticillatum in the montane belt. Geographically the Woodruff-Beech woodland of the northern Eifel belongs to the northern middle-European Melica uniflora type of the subatlantic Ilex aquifolium race of the Galio-Fagetum.
