Rotföhrenwälder in Österreich: eine syntaxonomische Neubewertung
Pine forests in Austria: a syntaxonomical revision
- Scots pine forests have been topic of repeated studies since the beginning of vegetation research. However, the phytosociological classification of these forests up until now has scarcely been satisfactory. In the following study a syntaxonomical revision of Scots pine forests in Austria is presented. A TWINSPAN-analysis based on 1372 phytosociological relevés from Austria and adjacent areas of Germany, Italy and the Czech Republic reveals three major types of Scots pine forests: thermophilous communities of continental inneralpine valleys (Ononido-Pinion), Erica-Scots pine forests on calcareous rocks (Erico-Pinion) as well as moss-Scots pine forests growing on acidic soils (Dicrano-Pinion). Because of floristic relationships, the Ononido-Pinion (in former times: class Pulsatillo-Pinetea) could be integrated in the class Erico-Pinetea. Within the three alliances six associations can be distinguished. On calcareous rocks such as limestone and dolomite only one association, Erico-Pinetum sylvestris could be distinguished due to the lack of good charakter species; this association can however be subdivided into eight subassociations. The floristic characteristics, site conditions and distribution of every syntaxon are described in detail. The nomenclature of the syntaxa will be discussed and revised. A synoptic table as well as identification keys for all associations and subassociations are included.
