- Some fundamental considerations of the phytosociological character-species method are discussed. It seems that not only the Quercetalia robori-petraeae Tx. 1937 but also the Prunetalia Tx. 1952 should be associated with the class Querco-Fagetea. Both orders are related to the Quercetalia pubescentis and the Fagetalia by numerous diagnostically important woody species, and these do form an unit. There is also a general coincidence and overlapping of the total species combination. The Querco-Fagetea form the central class of the European deciduous forests, composing - together with associated classes of primary and secondary special habitats the vegetation circle of deciduous summer-green forests in Europe. Since the synopsis of corresponding deciduous communities of other continents in so-called class groups follows the relationship of genera or families, the conception of "class group" cannot be regarded as a consequent continuation and "summit" of the synsystematical system of plant communities, which is built up according to the uniform principle of the identity of species. A better solution is to associate the class groups as formations groups with the system of formations.
