- This study gives a floristical comparison of Alno-Ulmion, Fagion and Quercion communities in the northern part of Central Europe, in order to describe phytogeographical characteristics of forest communities in Schleswig-Holstein. As a phytogeographical feature these communities contain several species with Atlantic-subatlantic distribution (e.g. Lonicera periclymenum, Hedera helix, Ilex aquifolium, Rubus fruticosus agg.) as well as boreal geoelements (e.g. Equisetum pratense, Trientalis europaea). Within Schleswig-Holstein these species are not distributed evenly but become locally abundant as a response to climatic differences: the floristic composition of forests on moraines formed by the penultimate glacial period shows Atlantic characteristics, that of forests on moraines of the last glacial period shows subatlantic affinities (western and eastern parts of Schleswig-Holstein respectively). Boreal influence is more distinct in western and northern parts of Schleswig-Holstein. Regarding the regional variation in floristics (and climate) MEUSEL et al. (1965) gave the most suitable phytogeographical zonation of the area. According to that scheme, Schleswig-Holstein is divided into two areas, of which the western belongs to the "Atlantic" and the eastern to the "Subatlantic province" of the temperate zone. A more detailed subdivision is discussed, herein.
