Zur Ruderalvegetation von Estland
Ruderal vegetation of Estonia
- Estonia has a species-rich ruderal flora for its northern location, which however is due to actual knowledge restricted to old, compact settlements and industrial centres. The richness of the wall flora of old buildings (castles, city-walls, and ruins of churches) - more than 80 species - is astonishing. This species pool contains only a few chasmophytes and reflects mainly the flora of the surroundings. Long distance dispersal is not important. The vegetation is documented by releves. The following ruderal plant communities are recorded in the towns: Capsello-Descurainietum sophiae, Urtico-Malvetum neglectae, Melilotus alba community, Carduus crispus community, Leonuro-Arctietum tomentosi, Artemisia vulgaris community. The succession of the Artemisietea communities leads to Sambuco-Salicion, mainly with Sambucus racemosa, but in Tallinn also with Acer negundo and Acer pseudoplatanus. The occurrence of archaephytic medicinal plants is highly characteristic for the surroundings of old castles. In the area of castle ruins, succession leads to hardwood communities with Acer platanoides, Fraxinus excelsior, and Ulmus glabra. The railroad vegetation of the Estonian capital Tallinn was investigated too. Some 110 species are to be found very near the tracks. The most important alien is Bunias orientalis. The vegetation of roadsides outside of settlements is rich in species and characterized by a multicoloured summertime aspect. Besides Dauco-Melilotion species, many species of Festuco-Brometea and Trifolio-Geranietea are to be found in the matrix. The mid-summer aspect often is dominated by Rumex thyrsiflorus. On Saaremaa, well developed Dauco-Meliotioncommunities can also be found along roadsides.
