This study develops a novel 2-step hedonic approach, which is used to construct a price index for German paintings. This approach enables the researcher to use every single auction record, instead of only those auction records that belong to a sub-sample of selected artists. This results in a substantially larger sample available for research and it lowers the selection bias that is inherent in the traditional hedonic and repeat sales methodologies. Using a unique sample of 61,135 auction records for German artworks created by 5,115 different artists over the period 1985 to 2007, we find that the geometric annual return on German art is just 3.8 percent, with a standard deviation of 17.87 percent. Although our results indicate that art underperforms the market portfolio and is not proportionally rewarded for downside risk, under some circumstances art should be included in an optimal portfolio for diversification purposes.
Background and objectives: Constrictive pericarditis (CP) is the result of a spectrum of primary cardiac and non-cardiac conditions. Little data exists on the cause-specific survival after pericardiectomy in the modern era. The impact of pericardial calcification (CA) on survival is unclear. We sought to determine the association of etiology of CP, CA and other clinical variables with long-term survival after pericardiectomy. Methods: We analyzed the records of 163 patients who underwent pericardiectomy for CP over a 24-year period at a single center. The diagnosis of CP was established by surgical report. Vital status was obtained by the Social Security Death Index. The Kaplan Meier method was used to estimate overall survival and survival by etiology group. Cox proportional hazards regression analysis was performed to assess the effect of various causes for CP on longterm survival while adjusting for age. Results: The etiology of CP was idiopathic in 75 patients (46%), prior cardiac surgery in 60 (37%), radiation treatment in 15 (9%) and miscellaneous in 13 patients (8%). Vital status was obtained in 160 patients (98%). Median follow-up was 6.9 years (range: 0.8 to 24.5 years). Perioperative mortality for all patients was 6%. Idiopathic CP had the best prognosis (7 year survival: 88%, 95% confidence interval [CI] 76% to 94%) followed by postsurgical (66%, 95% CI 52% to 78%) and postradiation CP (27%, 95% CI 9% to 58%). In bootstrap-validated proportional hazards analyses, predictors of poor survival were prior radiation, worse renal function, higher pulmonary artery pressure (PAP), abnormal left ventricular (LV) systolic function, lower serum sodium level, and older age. Pericardial calcification had no impact on survival. Conclusion: Long-term survival after pericardiectomy for CP is determined by the underlying etiology of constriction, LV systolic function, renal function, serum sodium, and PAP. Patients with postsurgical as well as postradiation CP have a survival inferior to patients with idiopathic CP. Perioperative Mortality is low. The relatively good survival after pericardiectomy in patients with idiopathic CP emphasizes the safety of pericardiectomy in this group.
This paper is an inductive look at the constituents found in a randomly selected Tagalog text, Bob Ong’s Alamat ng Gubat (Makati City, MM: Visual Print Enterprises, 2004). The analysis is based on the full text, but we will only be able to go through the first few lines of the text here, which we will do one by one, and discuss the structures found in each line of the text in bullet format after the relevant line. At the end of the paper we will bring up some important questions about the structures found in Tagalog based on this text.
In 1911 Eugen Bleuler (Bleuler, 1911) postulated that schizophrenia was a disorder resulting from inability to properly integrate mental processes. Around the same time, Carl Wernicke (Wernicke, 1894) proposed that psychosis might result from disruption of white matter tracts. Both of these statements can be considered early cornerstones of modern connectivity hypotheses developed towards the end of the twentieth century by such researchers as Karl Friston (1998) and Nancy Andreansen (1998). In the current work, the hypothesis that schizophrenia, rather than being a disorder or either anatomical or functional connectivity, is a disorder where both of these processes interact and influence the clinical presentation of patients, is examined. This is achieved through a detailed examination of a sample of chronic schizophrenia patients using a combination of functional and anatomical Magnetic Resonance Imaging techniques. The relationship of these measures to clinical symptoms is also explored. In the first study, anatomical connectivity at the whole-brain level is examined using Diffusion Tensor Imaging. The results of the study contribute to the previous literature on auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia and provide the first direct correlation between increased anatomical connectivity and increased severity of psychotic symptoms. The second study provides a thorough examination of the interhemispheric connectivity. This is achieved through a detailed examination of the corpus callosum using a combination of diffusivity and volumetric values. This is the first study to date where several anatomical methods are used in one sample. The results illustrate the importance of using different techniques to accurately characterize anatomical abnormalities observed in schizophrenia. In addition, contrary to previous research reports, the results of the current study imply that only specific sub-sections of the corpus callosum are affected by anatomical abnormalities. The pattern of these changes may influence clinical presentation of patients. Finally, functional connectivity at the whole-brain level is examined during resting-state using Independent Component Analysis. Similarly to the results of the anatomical examinations, it provides further supporting evidence that the pattern of disturbances observed in the current sample of schizophrenia patients examined herein reflects a combination of hypo- and hyperconnectivity. Moreover, the study further validates resting-state functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging as a reliable tool for examining functional abnormalities in schizophrenia.
Modern macroeconomics empirically addresses economy-wide incentives behind economic actions by using insights from the way a single representative household would behave. This analytical approach requires that incentives of the poor and the rich are strictly aligned. In empirical analysis a challenging complication is that consumer and income data are typically available at the household level, and individuals living in multimember households have the potential to share goods within the household. The analytical approach of modern macroeconomics would require that intra-household sharing is also strictly aligned across the rich and the poor. Here we have designed a survey method that allows the testing of this stringent property of intra-household sharing and find that it holds: once expenditures for basic needs are subtracted from disposable household income, household-size economies implied by the remainder household incomes are the same for the rich and the poor.
Background Brain-computer interface methodology based on self-regulation of slow-cortical potentials (SCPs) of the EEG (electroencephalogram) was used to assess conditional associative learning in one severely paralyzed, late-stage ALS patient. After having been taught arbitrary stimulus relations, he was evaluated for formation of equivalence classes among the trained stimuli. Methods A monitor presented visual information in two targets. The method of teaching was matching to sample. Three types of stimuli were presented: signs (A), colored disks (B), and geometrical shapes (C). The sample was one type, and the choice was between two stimuli from another type. The patient used his SCP to steer a cursor to one of the targets. A smiley was presented as a reward when he hit the correct target. The patient was taught A-B and B-C (sample – comparison) matching with three stimuli of each type. Tests for stimulus equivalence involved the untaught B-A, C-B, A-C, and C-A relations. An additional test was discrimination between all three stimuli of one equivalence class presented together versus three unrelated stimuli. The patient also had sessions with identity matching using the same stimuli. Results The patient showed high accuracy, close to 100%, on identity matching and could therefore discriminate the stimuli and control the cursor correctly. Acquisition of A-B matching took 11 sessions (of 70 trials each) and had to be broken into simpler units before he could learn it. Acquisition of B-C matching took two sessions. The patient passed all equivalence class tests at 90% or higher. Conclusion The patient may have had a deficit in acquisition of the first conditional association of signs and colored disks. In contrast, the patient showed clear evidence that A-B and B-C training had resulted in formation of equivalence classes. The brain-computer interface technology combined with the matching to sample method is a useful way to assess various cognitive abilities of severely paralyzed patients, who are without reliable motor control.
Samples of freshly fallen snow were collected at the high alpine research station Jungfraujoch (Switzerland) in February and March 2006 and 2007, during the Cloud and Aerosol Characterization Experiments (CLACE) 5 and 6. In this study a new technique has been developed and demonstrated for the measurement of organic acids in fresh snow. The melted snow samples were subjected to solid phase extraction and resulting solution analysed for organic acids by HPLC-MS-TOF using negative electrospray ionization. A series of linear dicarboxylic acids from C5 to C13 and phthalic acid, were identified and quantified. In several samples the biogenic acid pinonic acid was also observed. In fresh snow the median concentration of the most abundant acid, adipic acid, was 0.69 µg L−1 in 2006 and 0.70 µg L−1 in 2007. Glutaric acid was the second most abundant dicarboxylic acid found with median values of 0.46 µg L−1 in 2006 and 0.61 µg L−1 in 2007, while the aromatic acid phthalic acid showed a median concentration of 0.34 µg L−1 in 2006 and 0.45 µg L−1 in 2007. The concentrations in the samples from various snowfall events varied significantly, and were found to be dependent on the back trajectory of the air mass arriving at Jungfraujoch. Air masses of marine origin showed the lowest concentrations of acids whereas the highest concentrations were measured when the air mass was strongly influenced by boundary layer air.
