The kinorhynch species Echinoderes levanderi Karling, 1954 is redescribed. The species can now be recognized by the presence of spines in middorsal positions on segments 4–8, and in lateroventral positions on segments 6–9, with lateroventral spines on segment 9 showing sexual dimorphism; tubes in subdorsal and ventrolateral positions on segment 2, in sublateral positions on segments 4 and 8, in lateroventral positions on segment 5, and in laterodorsal positions on segment 10. Furthermore, the enlarged sieve plates on segment 9 make the species highly characteristic. New records of the species extend its distributional range into the Bothnian Bay where the bottom water salinity drops below 5 ppt, which is the lowest salinity recorded for a habitat with kinorhynchs.
The emergent technoscientific New World Order is being legitimised through discourses on openness and inclusivity. The paradox is that openness implies vulnerability and insecurities, particularly where closure would offer shelter. While some actors, including NGOs, preach openness of African societies, Africans clamour for protection, restitution and restoration. Africans struggle for ownership and access to housing, for national, cultural, religious, economic, and social belonging that would offer them the necessary security and protection, including protection from the global vicissitudes and matrices of power. In the presence of these struggles, to presuppose openness would be to celebrate vulnerability and insecurities. This book examines ways in which emergent technologies expose Africans and, more generally, peoples of the global south to political, economic, social, cultural and religious shocks occasioned by the coloniality of the global matrices of power. It notes that there is the use by global elites of technologies to incite postmodern revolutions designed to compound the vicissitudes and imponderables in the already unsettled lives of people north and south. Particularly targeted by these technologies are African and other governments that do not cooperate in the fulfilment of the interests of the hegemonic global elites. The book is handy to students and practitioners in security studies, African studies, development studies, global studies, policy studies, and political science.
DIGITIZATION CHALLENGES COMPANIES TO ACCELERATE THEIR INNOVATION CYCLES TO STAY COMPETITIVE. THIS RESEARCH INVESTIGATES HOW IT KNOWLEDGE ESTABLISHED ON DIFFERENT HIERARCHICAL LEVELS LEADS TO ORGANIZATIONAL INNOVATIVENESS. DIFFERENTIATING BETWEEN STRATEGICALLY MORE AND LESS DIGITIZED ORGANIZATIONS, THE RESULTS REVEAL: ORGANIZATIONAL INNOVATIVENESS IS SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER INFLUENCED BY THE IT KNOWLEDGE OF BUSINESS EMPLOYEES IN ORGANIZATIONS GIVING THE DIGITAL BUSINESS STRATEGY HIGH IMPORTANCE, WHEREAS THE MANAGEMENT’S ROLE DECREASES. WE FURTHER DEDUCE THE CIO’S POSITIVE ROLE FOR IT-ENABLED BUSINESS INNOVATION IN KNOWLEDGE-INTENSIVE INDUSTRIES, SUCH AS THE FINANCIAL SERVICES SECTOR.
Photolabile protecting groups (PPGs, cages, photocages) are molecules which can block the activity of a functional group and be removed by irradiation of light of an appropriate wavelength. One of the goals of this work was to design new photolabile protecting groups, based on a literature known one. The far-UV absorbing diethylamino benzyl (DEAMb) photocage, developed by Wang et al., was selected as structural basis for this work. In order to trigger the uncaging reaction with longer wavelengths (≥365 nm), thus allowing also biological applications, its structure was optimized. This was done by elongating the π-orbital conjugation using biphenyl derivatives instead of a single aromatic moiety. The photocage was loaded with glutamic acid as the leaving group.
The highest bathochromic shift was shown by compounds, which had the smallest sterical hindrance imposed on the second aromatic ring. The absorption spectrum was more redshifted if the second aromatic ring contained an electron withdrawing group. However, the stronger the substituents electron withdrawing strength was, the lower the uncaging quantum yield was. It was rationalized, that this is due to a decreased excited state electron density at the benzylic carbon of the DEAMb core which is necessary to trigger bond dissociation. This has been confirmed using TDDFT (time-dependent density functional theory) computations done by Jan von Cosel, Konstantin Falahati and Carsten Hamerla (from the group of Irene Burghardt). The best uncaging quantum yield was 42% for m-phenyl substituted DEAMb, while if a strong electron withdrawing group was present (nitro group), there was no photoactivity at all.
In order to achieve a better π-orbital conjugation of the non-coplanar biphenyl derivatives, a C-C bond was introduced between the benzylic carbon and the second aromatic ring. The resulting planar compounds belong to the fluorene class. The computational data predicted the photochemical meta effect to some extent to be preserved in these molecules. A set of fluorene derivatives was synthesized and photochemically characterized. The molar absorption coefficients of all prepared fluorene derivatives were higher than for any of the biphenyl derivatives. Quantum yields of the acetate release ranged between 3-42%, thus being as good as the best glutamic acid releasing biphenyl compounds. The highest uncaging cross section of the acetate release from the prepared fluorene derivatives was above 5000 M^-1 cm^-1. This value proves the high potential of the new fluorene based photocages developed in this work. Furthermore, release of hydroxide ion from fluorenol could be shown along with generation of, presumably, fluorenyl cation. These intriguing results paves a way for further exploration of fluorene based photocages for the release of bad leaving groups.
The second part of this work describes the custom synthesis of 13C labeled compounds for the VIPER (VIbrationally Promoted Electronic Resonance) project. In the VIPER pulse sequence, a molecule is vibrationally excited by a narrow band IR-pump pulse. The following Vis-pump pulse will promote the vibrationally pre-excited molecules to an electronically excited state. This Vis-pump pulse is offresonant for the not vibrationally pre-selected species and only resonant with the molecules, which are already pre-excited by the IR-pump pulse. Since the IR absorption bands usually are well resolved, a selective excitation of one molecule in an ensemble of similar ones is possible in the IR frequency range. Isotopologues and isotopomers are an extreme case of molecules which are near identical and differ only by isotopic composition or position. As a result in solution and at room temperature they have an identical UV-Vis absorption spectrum but different IR spectrum. This allows vibrational excitation of only one isotopologue (or isotopomer).
Isotopic labels were introduced in known photocages: 7-diethylamino coumarin (DEACM) and para-hydroxy phenacyl (pHP). The position for isotopic label incorporation in these molecules was guided by computations done by Jan von Cosel and Carsten Neumann. To allow control of the photoreactions in an ultrafast timescale, an IR active leaving group was used. The uncaging behavior of the prepared molecules in steady state was tested using chromatography (HPLC) and spectroscopy (1H NMR, FTIR and UV-Vis). The VIPER experiments were performed by Daniela Kern-Michler, Carsten Neumann, Nicole Mielke and Luuk van Wilderen (from the group of Jens Bredenbeck). A selective uncaging of only the vibrationally pre-excited molecules could be achieved.
As the Chinese economy continues to grow, increased commercial engagement with Africa will offer the continent new and rewarding prospects for trade, investment and economic development. The challenge is for Africa to grasp these opportunities and take full advantage of China's friendship and willingness to co-operate. The Forum on China-Africa Co-operation (FOCAC) provides a mechanism for all-inclusive diplomatic consultation to advance China Africa co-operation and to effectively manage expanding economic inter-dependence. FOCAC is a political arena for developing Sino-African co-operation and problem solving. FOCAC also provides an important framework for developing a common development agenda. Given new global trends towards antiglobalisation, FOCAC's importance is expected to increase in the years ahead. This book seeks to strengthen the China-Africa relationship and offer new suggestions for both policy makers and scholars seeking to understand and advance FOCAC for mutual benefit. FOCAC holds the key to Africa's development and long-term prosperity. The new policy initiatives and proposals outlined in this study make a very valuable contribution to strengthening FOCAC and advancing Africa's economic development.
Results of a brief examination of the spring aspect of Odonata at the Abrau Peninsula and some nearby localities on 2127th May 2018 are presented. Lestes dryas and Caliaeschna microstigma are reported for the Peninsula for the first time, revealing the world northernmost record of the latter. Some old data of Odonata at Novorossiysk and some recent erroneous data on the Krasnodarskiy Kray are referenced and discussed. The known Odonata fauna of the Abrau Peninsula reaches 38 species.
In April 2018 the European Commission announced its holistic approach to Artificial Intelligence (AI) based on the following three pillars: first, to boost financial support and encourage uptake by the public and private sectors in order to reach investments in AI-related research and innovation by at least 20 billion Euros by the end of 2020. The second pillar aims at preparing for socio-economic changes in terms of the upcoming transformation of the labour market. Finally, the European Commission will ensure an appropriate ethical and legal framework by developing AI ethics guidelines and providing guidance on the interpretation of the Product Liability directive. ...
The described Afrotropical species of the genus Hexophthalma Karsch, 1879 (under the genus name Sicarius Walckenaer, 1847), of the spider family Sicariidae Keyserling, 1880, were recently reviewed. In the present paper the Afrotropical species of the genus Hexophthalma are revisited. After a thorough examination of all the available specimens from nine major collections, the species H. testacea (Purcell, 1908) is here synonymized with H. hahni (Karsch, 1878), three new species are described – H. binfordae sp. nov., H. goanikontesensis sp. nov. (both from Namibia) and H. leroyi sp. nov. (from South Africa) – and the male of H. dolichocephala (Lawrence, 1928) is described for the first time. The distribution of the species is also revised and a new updated key to the species is compiled.
Chigger mites of the African continent are reviewed using data acquired from the literature and examination of the collections deposited at the Royal Museum for Central Africa (Tervuren, Belgium) and the Natural History Museum (London, UK). All findings for 443 valid chigger species belonging to 61 genera are reported, along with details on their collection locality and host species. Three new synonyms are proposed: Straelensia Vercammen-Grandjean & Kolebinova, 1968 (= Anasuscuta Brown, 2009 syn. nov.); Herpetacarus (Herpetacarus) Vercammen-Grandjean, 1960 (= Herpetacarus (Lukoschuskaaia) Kolebinova & Vercammen-Grandjean, 1980 syn. nov.); Gahrliepia brennani (Jadin & Vercammen-Grandjean, 1952) (= Gahrliepia traubi Audy, Lawrence & Vercammen-Grandjean, 1961 syn. nov.). A new replacement name is proposed: Microtrombicula squirreli Stekolnikov, 2017 nom. nov. pro Eltonella myonacis heliosciuri Vercammen-Grandjean, 1965 (praeocc. Vercammen-Grandjean, 1965). Ninety new combinations are proposed. Keys to subfamilies, genera and subgenera of African trombiculid larvae and diagnoses of these taxa are given.
