N2  - Pour ce qui est de la période précoloniale, l'existence, en Afrique au sud du Sahara, de cette forme de déviance qu'est le banditisme social peut poser problème; pour la période coloniale par contre, la présence de ce phénomène ne peut souffrir aucune contestation, tant les témoignages l'attestant sont à la fois nombreux, divers et concordants. Ainsi, tout au long de cette dernière séquence historique, dans beaucoup de régions du continent, il nous est offert de multiples exemples d'initiatives individuelles et marquantes de protestation sociale. Face à la déficience des structures traditionnelles de riposte, des hommes d'action ont opposé un refus individuel à la mise en place violente de l'ordre colonial. Retranchés dans les zones échappant au contrôle de la nouvelle autorité, ils ont essayé de tenir tête à son action intégratrice, et l'échec de celle-ci - quelle qu'en puisse du reste être la raison - expliquerait certaines carrières de bandit social.
N2  - The saga of Yaadikkoon is another phenomenon showing that "social banditry" is in fact a form of resistance to colonial oppression. After being outlawed following an altercation with the police, Yaadikkoon for a long time experienced colonial order among thieves and robbers haunting Dakar harbour and in the ranks of the colonial army. For half a decade, this "knight errant" who was arrested, tried and who broke out of jail many times, defied and humbled the colonial police and stood as the archenemy of all the custodians of the social and political order. His outstanding personality inspired many extraordinary stories in which reality and fiction co-mingle. In the end, he surrendered and was granted reprieve. He retired in his home village where he devoted his last years to reading and teaching the Koran.
