N2 - The Bardejov Catechism is the translation of Martin Lutherʻs work Der kleine Katechismus from 1529. It is the oldest book in Slovak, published in 1581 by David Guttgesell in Bardejov/Bartfeld. The work has been re-read from the theological aspect, but until now there has been no translatological analysis. The study is the first attempt to illuminate a possible German source of the Slovak translation, as well as the status of the translator in the context of Slovak-German inter-literary relations in the 16th century. It focuses on the textual structure of the German original, style segments and chosen translation solutions. The study notes a high level of translation work that demonstrates the skillfulness and competence of the translator, his ability to preserve the living language and plastic imagination of the original as well as the emotional character of the content, driven by the effort for popular character as well as sacral dignity. Part of the research intention is the problematic of the translation to a related target language – Slovakized Czech.
