A Holocaust survivor, he arrived in Palestine in 1947 and served in the Israel Defense Forces. He holds an LLB from Tel-Aviv University and a PhD from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In 1975, he was appointed Professor of Political Science at the University of Haifa. He is a member of the Labor Party, a Member of the Knesset from 1981-99 and Speaker of the Knesset from 1992-96. In 2000, he was appointed Chairman of the Yad Vashem Council. He has written children's books, books on political and sociological aspects of Israel, as well as on the Holocaust. He is the recipient of many prizes. Shewach Weiss is Israel's ambassador to Poland. ER -
