N2  - In this article, we analyse the use of modality markers in a German text taken from the Freiburger Korpus. We notice how the necessity of preserving face influences the speakers' choices of downgraders and upgraders, devices that determine the intensity of the speech acts and, therefore, the mood of the interaction.
N2  - Die Autorin analysiert die Anwendung der modality markers einem Text aus dem Freiburger Korpus. Sie zeigt wie das Bedürfnis, das Gesicht zu wahren, die Sprecher dazu führt, downgraders oder upgraders auszuwählen, die die Intensität der Sprechakte und damit auch die emotionale Stimmung der Interaktion steuern.
