N2  - The paper aims to investigate the impact of Axel Honneth’s work – in particular his theory of recognition – within sociology. After indicating the sociological elements of his theoretical proposal and comparing some current discussions, the paper sketches out the main empirical applications of the theory of recognition: contemporary identitarian configurations, the social exclusion of minority groups, social movements, intercultural relations and the changes in the world of work in late modern society. In the final part, the paper highlights some developments in contemporary sociological theory that could limit the sociological reception of Honneth’s work.
