N2  - Die Panzerkiefer (Pinus leucodermis) ist als ausgeprägte Licht- und Pionierbaumart durch den Charakter als Tertiärrelikt von eingeengter ökologischer Amplitude. In Jugoslawien, Bulgarien und in Kalabrien ist sie auf azonale Exstremstandorte in der montanen Stufe beschränkt, da konkurrenzkräftigere Schlußbaumarten (Fagus moesiaca, F. sylvatica, Abies alba, Picea abies, Pinus peuce, auch Pinus mugo) die zonalen montanen bis subalpinen Standorte einnehmen. In Nordgriechenland (Olymp), am Schnittpunkt von Arealgrenzen und beim Übergang von der südost- zur südeuropäischen Waldregion, wo hochmontane-subalpine Konkurrenten fehlen oder von reduzierter Konkurrenzkraft sind, kann Pinus leucodermis eine mächtige Höhenstufe aufbauen. Dort ist sie nicht nur eine wichtige Boden- und Lawinenschutz-Baumart, sondern kann durch die bessere Wuchsleistung auch zur Holzproduktion beitragen.
N2  - Pinus leucodermis is a distinct pioneer species because of its character as a Tertiary remnant with small ecological amplitude. In Yugoslawia, Bulgaria and Calabria Pinus leuoodermis is restricted to extreme azonal sites in the montane belt because more competitive climax tree species (Fagus moesiaca, F. sylvatica, Abies alba, Picea abies, Pinus peuce, P. mugo) occupy the zonal montane to subalpine areas. In the northern Greece (around Mt. Olympus) where southeastern and southern forest regions of Europe come together Pinus leucodermis is able to cover a large altitudinal belt, due to a lack in montane-subalpine competitors and reduced competition from other tree species. In these places Pinus leucodermis is important not only as protection and as a ground cover but also for high-performance wood production.
