N2  - The purpose of the paper is to provide an overview of the situation of language teaching in the German-speaking schools in Transylvania during their historic evolution. The paper gives information especially on the qualifications of the teachers, on teaching methodology and language classes. The focus of the analysis are the teaching materials used, illustrated by means of a comparative approach based on two class books. The paper also emphasizes the importance of school for the continuity of this group.
