  • The research addresses the postulated correlation between information technology (IT) and social change. The emphasis is on the way the paradigm of technology-driven change is adopted in different societies. The basis of the results presented here is ethnographic research conducted between 1999 and 2002 in the Republic of Cyprus (Nicosia), Colombia (Bogotá), Romania (Timisoara), India (Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore), and the United States (San Francisco, Silicon Valley). With a comparative perspective and as members of transnational professional communities, eighty experts from the IT sector in technology and innovation hubs were interviewed on the meaning of IT for changes in their societies. The perspective of cultural anthropology on information technology ist that this term can be seen as part of a dense "conceptual field", vested with "cultural logics" transferring key concepts like modernity, development, and progress. Experts make inputs into "conceptual configurations" of information technology, and can be identified as agents at "cultural interfaces", producing and transporting cultural discourse on information technology as tool for social change. With an approach of actor-driven dynamics of change, they can be considered as constitutive for the production of cultural logics of change and restructuring, described here as a "culture of change". The investigation contributes to the cultural anthropology's analytical knowledge of contemporary processes of modernization and development in contemporary societies, and engages the perspective of transnationalization.
