  • In this essay, tension/suspense is consistently understood as a psychic phenomenon, not as a textual property. Refering to psycho-physiological appearances that can be regarded as proto-typical for the folk concept of 'tension', the range of possibly tension-provoking emotions is narrowed down, in a first step, to emotions of stress. By this example, I demonstrate the necessity of distinguishing tension responses triggered by fictional situations from those triggered by fictional characters. I then pick up the problem of mainly cognitively provoked tension – so far the most deeply explored aspect of tension/suspense in literary studies – and reconceptualize it with the aid of the 'Zeigarnik effect' from gestalt theory. I conclude with presenting and specifying, under the concept of 'planning emotions', a third category of tension-provoking reader emotions.
