Phänologisches Spektrum einer kretischen Phrygana

Phenological spectrum of a Cretan phrygana

Arisarum vulgare-Phase, 3. Sarcopoterium spinosum-Phase, 4. Galium murale-Phase, 5. Crepis cretica-Phase, 6. Ononis reclinata-Phase, 7. Pteridocephalus plumosus-Phase, 8. Teucrium microphyllum-Phase, 9. Coridothymus capitatus-Phase, 10. Sommerruhe, 11. Carlina graeca-Phase, 12. Urginea maritima-Phase.
  • A complete analytical diagram of flowering and fruiting in a stand of thermo-mediterranean phrygana (Coridothymus capitatus-Calicotome villosa community, phytosociological class Cisto-Micromerietea Oberd. 1954) is presented, based on both phenological observations and enumeration of flowering units in southwestern Crete (Greece) during 1993-95. The ecologically significant phenomena in the vegetative development of certain species are also highlighted. The following phenological characteristics turned out to be least variable and thus qualified for establishing symphenological groups - (1) beginning of the main flowering period, and (2) maximum flowering. By means of these characteristics, a total of 107 taxa is divided into symphenological groups which represent phases expressing the plant phenological rhythm of the ecosystem throughout the year. Twelve such phenological phases are proposed and the most important flowering, fruiting and vegetative aspects of each phase are described, together with significant meteorological events. The phases (2-)3—7 are dominated by annuals, 8-9 by chamaephytes, 12 and 1(-2) by geophytes, whilst the phases 10-11 in the heat of midsummer form an aestivation period for the plant life of the thermo-mediterranean phrygana. The degree of annual phenological variability and the ecological significance of early and late flowering of many species, apart from their respective main flowering periods, is discussed.
