• In Süd- und Mittelhessen wurden Pflanzen aus dem Formenkreis des Symphytum officinale an natürlichen Standorten gesammelt und 53 äußere Merkmale aufgenommen. Durch Zählung der Chromosomen konnte jede Pflanze eindeutig einer Sippe des Formenkreises zugeordnet werden. Anhand von im Feld leicht zu messenden Merkmalen wurden die Pflanzen auf morphologische Unterschiede zwischen S. bohemicum und S. officinale überprüft. Bei der Auswertung der morphologischen Daten wurden weite Überschneidungsbereiche bei den meisten Merkmalen zwischen den Sippen festgestellt. Deutliche Unterschiede treten bei der Form der Blätter und bei einigen Blütenmerkmalen auf. Vor allem das Verhältnis der apikalen Öffnung der Krone zur Breite der Glocke sowie die Länge des Griffelabschnittes, der die Krone überragt, sind Merkmale, die bei den Sippen unterschiedlich ausgeprägt sind. Die statistische Auswertung mehrerer Merkmalskombinationen erbrachte eine deutliche Trennung der Sippen S. bohemicum und S. officinale. Abschließend werden die Ergebnisse unter Berücksichtigung weiterer Literatur bewertet. Die taxonomische Zuordnung innerhalb des Formenkreises wird diskutiert. Es wird dargestellt, daß S. bohemicum die Kriterien einer Biospecies erfüllt und daher als eigene, von S. officinale getrennte Art geführt werden sollte, obwohl nicht jedes Individuum auf der morphologischen Ebene eindeutig angesprochen werden kann.
• Plants of the Symphytum officinale complex were sampled at natural sites in southern and central Hesse and investigated for 53 external characteristics. The position of each plant, whether belonging to the diploid Symphytum bohemicum or to the tetraploid Symphytum officinale, was defined by determining its chromosome number. Subsequently the morphological differences between the two taxa were examined using characteristics that can be easily collected in the field. The ranges of variation of most characteristics overlap considerably. Differences exist in the leaf-shape and the flower-structure. The two taxa are especially differentiated in two characteristics: in the ratio of the apical aperture of the corolla to the maximum diameter of the tube, and in the length of the distal style segment protruding from the corolla. The statistical analysis of several combinations of characteristics revealed a clear differentiation between Symphytum officinale and Symphytum bohemicum. Finally the results are interpreted in the light of previously published work. The classification of the taxa within the complex is discussed. Symphytum bohemicum fulfils the criteria of a biospecies and thus should be treated separately, even though not every individual can be unequivocally identified by its morphological characteristics.
