• Ausgehend von der für eine Assoziation notwendigen charakteristischen Arten- bzw. Artengruppenkombination wird vorgeschlagen, daß für die Festlegung der Rangstufe einer Vegetationseinheit die diagnostisch wichtige Artenkombination herangezogen wird. Zu ihr gehören: die Charakterarten; hochstete Arten mit hohem Strukturwert; hochstete Differentialarten zur floristisch nächstähnlichen Vegetationseinheit. Zur besseren und ökologisch sinnvolleren Verwendung von Charakterarten werden die Vorschläge zur Einschränkung ihres Gültigkeitsbereiches auf verschiedene Formationen und Erdräume begrüßt. Es werden als Formationsbereiche vorgeschlagen: Wälder; Gebüsche und Zwergstrauchheiden; Grasländer, Kraut- und Pionierfluren; Wasserpflanzengemeinschaften; Kryptogamengemeinschaften. Für Europa werden als pflanzengeographische Gültigkeitsbereiche vorgeschlagen: Makaronesisch-Mediterrane Region; Pontisch-Südsibirische Region; Orientalisch-Turanische Region; Mitteleuropäische Region; Zirkumboreale Region; Zirkumarktische Region.
• Proceeding from the characteristic combination of species or species groups which are necessary for an association, it is proposed to use the diagnostically important species-combination for fixing the degree of a vegetation unit. To it belongs: character species; constant species with importance for the structure of the unit; constant species differentiating to the floristically nearest units. For the better, more ecologically rational use of the character species, proposals to Iimit the range of validity are welcome. For the Iimitation of validity to plant formations, the following are proposed: forests and woodlands; scrub and dwarf-shrub communities; grasslands, herb and pioneer communities; water-plant communities; cryptogam communities. For Europe, the following valid plant-geographical regions are proposed: Macaronesic-Mediterranean region; Pontic-south Sibirian region; Orientalic-Turanian region; middle-European region; circumboreal region; circumarctic region.
