- In 1985 and 1986, one hundred 3 to 12 year-old artificial ponds in the higher regions of the Harz Mountains (Lower Saxony, Federal Republic of Germany) were studied to get a complete description of their hydrochemistry, flora and vegetation. Because of their nutrient conditions, the ponds could be divided into poor (oligotrophic/dystrophic) and richer (oligotrophic-mesotrophic) groups, whereby the last group contains subgroups differing from their hydrogencarbonate concentrations. The flora and vegetation reflect these nutrient differences. On the other hand, the vegetational development will be influenced by the floristic conditions before digging the ponds and by floristic propagation and dispersal strategies. In the Harz Mountains these secondary man-made ecosystems represent an interesting alternative to the monotonous forests dominated by spruce (Picea abies), covering 80% to 95% of the landscape. In Central Europe these mainly oligotrophic ponds are rather rare today. Most of them have been destroyed by agricultural and urban eutrophication. Finally some proposals for pond construction and operation are given.
