Die Vegetation offener Kalkschutthalden der Nördlichen Frankenalb

The vegetation of open limestone screes in the northern Frankenalb

  • A rich array of plant communities is reported from boulder screes in the northern Frankenalb, Bavaria, Germany. Here the plant communities are linked by dynamic succession influenced by the physical features of the habitat. In total 23 plant communities, in seven associations, have been recorded for the area. Exposition of the site, light and microsite temperature regime, debris size and debris/soil relations as well as scree stability have been found to be the critical factors determining plant community arrays. To characterize each site, the light and temperature regime was measured and soil analyses were carried out. Shady and more humid areas at the bottom of large boulder screes are colonised by the Gymnocar pietum robertiani. This community is linked to the Bromo-Seslerietum allietosum by a Seslena-rich transitional stage. The Galeopsietum angustifoliae typicum is confined to the most exposed and sunny spots and is linked to the former associations by the Epilobio-Geranietum robertiani homalothecietosum. The Clematis vitalba-rich subassociation of the Galeopsietum (often described as Schwalbenwurzflur) is confined to semi-shaded sites on coarse debris. If the debris stabilises, the Galeopsietum typicum is succeeded first by the transitional Rhytidium stage, then by an Echium-rich community (Teucrio botryos-Melicetum ciliatae rbytidietosum, Echium-Variante) and finally by a Geranion community, the Vincetoxico-Seselietum. This plant community is described as new in this paper. The marl-rich debris screes (containing mainly small debris) are colonised by the Campanula rapunculoides-subassocisxion of the Teucrio-Melicetum. The largest boulder screes are located in the Pegnitz river system near the town of Hersbruck. Other areas in the Frankenalb, such as the Wiesent- and Weismain river systems, have only marl-rich screes containing mainly small debris particles. We regard the boulder screes of the northern Frankenalb as important refugia and sanctuaries for plants and animals that have survived here from former colder and warmer macroclimatic regimes during the last ice age and the Atlantic period. Changes of landscape management practice and grazing regimes in the last 50 years have led to invasion of bushes into many screes, since only few are naturally free of trees. In order to safeguard the boulder screes, such practices need to be re-instated and active management needs to be pursued.
