N2  - At the beginning of World War I a large number of war sermons ("Kriegspredigten") were published in Germany. The first part of this paper presents an overview of sermons given by my great-grandfather Karl König in August 1914. It elaborates on the general characteristics of war sermons as well as König's specific target audience and his linguistic means. The second part discusses König's usage of the term "Opfer" (victim vs. sacrifice).
