Lecture Series "Empire and Violence" : conference report

  • Throughout history, aspirations for imperial domination have served as catalysts for acts of mass violence and have been linked with countless wars of aggression. Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which was defined in Germany as a "change in times" ('Zeitenwende'), has stressed the need for an in-depth analysis of the relationship between imperial ideology and mass violence. To encourage a deeper examination of the topic, Juliane Prade-Weiss (LMU Munich) and Dominik Markl (University of Innsbruck) have organized a transdisciplinary lecture series within the framework of the research project "Discourses of Mass Violence in Comparative Perspective". The lecture series in Munich and Innsbruck was composed of eleven presentations and included speakers from diverse fields, such as religious studies, international relations, political science, contemporary history, ancient history of the Near and Middle East as well as Central and Eastern European history.
