• Nachdem Sphagnum tenerum Sull. & Lesq. im 19. Jahrhundert aus Nordamerika beschrieben worden war, wurde die Art von Dismier (1928) sowie Paul (1924, 1931) als Synonym zu C. acutifolium (nemoreum, capillifolium) gestellt. Seitdem wurde das Taxon in Europa kaum mehr unterschieden. so von Daniels & Eddy (1985). Erst Lange (1982), Dierssen (1996), Ludwig et al. (1996), Koperski et al. (2000) sowie Meinunger & Schröder (2007) unterscheiden Sphagnum tenerum in Europa wieder als Art, Nyholm (1955ff) als Varietät. Zudem gibt es noch ein Sphagnum tenerum Warnst., was die Konfusion noch größer macht und eine Klärung verlangt. Warnstorf (1903) führt tenerum und schimperi an. Er schlüsselt S. tenerum aus, behandelt die Art aber nicht im Text (weil sie nicht in der Mark Brandenburg vorkam?) und führt schimperi unter S. acutifolium var. viride an, die als „grau-, gras- oder gelbgrün ohne Beimischung von Rot“ beschrieben wird.
• Sphagnum tenerum Warnst. is not only an illegitimate homonym for S. tenerum Sull. & Lesq. but an nomen dubium. The type is from North America and is identical with Sphagnum tenerum Sull. & Lesq. Sphagnum schimperi (Warnst.) Röll was regarded as synonymous with S. tenerum Warnst, however, a type does not exist anymore. The description given by Röll indicates that it is a hemiisophyllous form of S. capillifolium. Sphagnum tenerum Sull. & Lesq. shall be differentiated from S. capillifolium according to some authors by longer stem leaves with tubulose, serrate apex with many pores in the concave surface. Other authors describe the stem leaves with a rounded apex. An examination of an isotype revealed that the stem leaves are acuminate but neither tubulose nor serrate. Sphagnum tenerum can, however, be differentiated by the presence of numerous commissural pores and also central pores in the stem leaves and the lack of a border of narrow cells along the margins of the stem leaves.
