We use minutes from 17,000 financial advisory sessions and corresponding client portfolio data to study how active client involvement affects advisor recommendations and portfolio outcomes. We find that advisors confronted with acquiescent clients stick to their standards and recommend expensive but well diversified mutual fund portfolios. However, if clients take an active role in the meetings, advisors deviate markedly from their standards, resulting in poorer portfolio diversification and lower Sharpe ratios. Our findings that advisors cater to client requests parallel the phenomenon of doctors prescribing antibiotics to insistent patients even if inappropriate, and imply that pandering diminishes the quality of advice.
Financial literacy affects wealth accumulation, and pension planning plays a key role in this relationship. In a large field experiment, we employ a digital pension aggregation tool to confront a treatment group with a simplified overview of their current pension claims across all pillars of the pension system. We combine survey and administrative bank data to measure the effects on actual saving behavior. Access to the tool decreases pension uncertainty for treated individuals. Average savings increase - especially for the financially less literate. We conclude that simplification of pension information can potentially reduce disparities in pension planning and savings behavior.
Zum ersten Mal wurde in Deutschland eine groß angelegte wissenschaftliche Studie zur Machbarkeit und zum Nutzen einer säulenübergreifenden Renteninformationsplattform durchgeführt, unter realen Bedingungen und mit mehreren tausend Teilnehmern. Die beiden zentralen Ergebnisse sind, dass ein elektronisches Rentencockpit auch in Deutschland technisch machbar ist und beträchtlichen individuellen Zusatznutzen für die Bürgerinnen und Bürger stiften würde. Die Langfristanalysen der Pilotstudie zeigen, dass selbst die einmalige Schaffung von Rententransparenz für viele Teilnehmer Anlass genug ist, ihren Rentenplan zu überdenken und sich aktiv mit ihrer Altersvorsorge auseinanderzusetzen und ihr Verhalten zu ändern. Teilnehmer mit Zugang zu einem elektronischen Rentencockpit fühlen sich nach der Studie deutlich besser informiert und neigen dazu ihr Sparverhalten stärker anzupassen als Personen ohne Zugang. Die außerordentlich hohe Bereitschaft zur Teilnahme und die Antworten in den Online-Befragungen sind zudem Beleg für den großen Bedarf an systemgestützter, individueller Rententransparenz. Soll ein Rentencockpit Verbreitung in Deutschland finden, scheint eine automatisierte, elektronische Bereitstellung von Vertragsdaten von Seiten der Rententräger jedoch unabdingbar, da die eigenständige Suche und teilmanuelle Bereitstellung von Standmitteilungen für die meisten Studienteilnehmer ein großes Hindernis darstellt.
We use data from a German online brokerage and a survey to show that retail investors sharply reduce risk-taking in response to nearby firm bankruptcies, which are not pre- dictive of returns. The effects on trading are spatially highly concentrated, immediate and not persistent. They seem to operate through more pessimistic expected returns and increased risk aversion and do not reflect wealth effects or changes in background risks. Investors learn about bankruptcies through immediate coverage in local newspapers. Our findings suggest that non-informative local experiences that make downside risks of stock investment more salient contribute to idiosyncratic short-term fluctuations in trading.
Incentivized experiments in which individuals receive monetary rewards according to the outcomes of their decisions are regarded as the gold standard for preference elicitation in experimental economics. These task-related real payments are considered necessary to reveal subjects' "true preferences". Using a systematic, large-sample approach with three subject pools of private investors, professional investors, and students, we test the effect of task-related monetary incentives on risk preferences elicited in four standard experimental tasks. We find no systematic differences in behavior between subjects in the incentivized and non-incentivized regimes. We discuss implications for academic research and for applications in the field.
We show that financial advisors recommend more costly products to female clients, based on minutes from about 27,000 real-world advisory meetings and client portfolio data. Funds recommended to women have higher expense ratios controlling for risk, and women less often receive rebates on upfront fees for any given fund. We develop a model relating these findings to client stereotyping, and empirically verify an additional prediction: Women (but not men) with higher financial aptitude reject recommendations more frequently. Women state a preference for delegating financial decisions, but appear unaware of associated higher costs. Evidence of stereotyping is stronger for male advisors.

Talking about finances can no longer be a taboo subject.
We show that exposure to anti-capitalist ideology can exert a lasting influence on attitudes towards capital markets and stock-market participation. Utilizing novel survey, bank, and broker data, we document that, decades after Germany's reunification, East Germans invest significantly less in stocks and hold more negative views on capital markets. Effects vary by personal experience under communism. Results are strongest for individuals remembering life in the German Democratic Republic positively, e. g., because of local Olympic champions or living in a "showcase city". Results reverse for those with negative experiences like religious oppression, environmental pollution, or lack of Western TV entertainment.
We examine the effect of personal, two-way communication on the payment behavior of delinquent borrowers. Borrowers who speak with a randomly assigned bank agent are significantly more likely to successfully resolve the delinquency relative to borrowers who do not speak with a bank agent. Call characteristics related to the human touch of the call, such as the likeability of the agent’s voice, significantly affect payment behavior. Borrowers who speak with a bank agent are also significantly less likely to become delinquent again. Our findings highlight the value of a human element in interactions between financial institutions and their customers.
