Checklist of the Aphodiini of Mexico, Central and South America (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Aphodiinae) (2007)

This preliminary checklist of Aphodiini south of the United States is prepared to provide published data for a future web-based checklist of all New World Aphodiinae. All species names are used in combination with their currently accepted generic name, creating many new combinations. A few genus-species combinations are discussed. New synonymies based on recent studies of type specimens are made: Aphodius azteca Harold = Aphodius multimaculosus Hinton; Aphodius ornatus Schmidt = Aphodius magnopunctatus Hinton; Aphodius caracaensis Petrovitz = Aphodius brasilicola Balthasar; Aphodius guatemalensis Bates = Aphodius striatipennis Petrovitz; Aphodius kuntzeni Schmidt = Aphodius amplinotum Gordon and Howden = Aphodius michiliensis Deloya; Aphodius bimaculosus Schmidt = Aphodius xalapensis Galante et al.; Aphodius caracanus Balthasar = Aphodius martinsi Petrovitz; Aphodius volxemi Harold = Aphodius squamifer Petrovitz.

Ferrerianus, new genus of South American Aphodiini is created for Aphodius biimpressus Schmidt from Paraguay; the latter is figured and lectotype is designated.

Agrilinellus, new genus is created for Agrilinus azteca (Harold) (type species), A. chiapasensis (Galante, Stebnicka and Verdú), and A. ornatus (Schmidt). Four new species from Mexico are described: Agrilinellus abbonai, Agrilinellus antonioreyi, Agrilinellus nuriae, Agrilinellus oaxacaensis.

The morphology of the labrum (epipharynx, ikrioma and aboral surface) of adult Aphodiini is figured and discussed. An updated glossary of the constitutive parts is presented.

Neotrichaphodioides, new genus of Neotropical Aphodiini, with description of a new species from Peru (Scarabaeoidea: Scarabaeidae: Aphodiinae) (2010)

The new genus Neotrichaphodioides and the new species N. woytkowskii from Peru are described. Aphodius caracanus Balthasar, A. ecuadoriensis Petrovitz, A. forsterianus Balthasar, and A. volxemi Harold are redescribed and figured, and transferred into Neotrichaphodioides, all becoming new combinations. New synonymies of Aphodius martinsi Petrovitz with N. caracanus (Balthasar) and Aphodius squamifer Petrovitz with N. volxemi (Harold) are presented. The lectotype of A. volxemi is here designated.

Dung beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Aphodiinae) of the Mpala Research Centre and environs, Laikipia District, Kenya (2008)

The dung beetle fauna of the subfamily Aphodiinae occurring in the Laikipia District of Kenya was surveyed. In total, 14 genera and 29 species were found and these taxa are placed in identification keys. Known generic distributions are provided and species collection data listed.

Gordonius rhinocerillus, a new genus and new species of Colombian Aphodiini is described and figured. It is the only known member of New World Aphodiinae where the male has a prominent horn on the head.

The species belonging to the genus Coelotrachelus Schmidt, 1913 are redescribed and figured. The Mexican Coelotrachelus ixtapalapaensis, new species, is described.

Besides the two species at present known belonging to the genus Trichonotuloides Balthasar (T. glyptus (Bates) and T. latecrenatus (Bates)), two new Mexican species, T. alfonsinae and T. hansferyi, are herein described (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Aphodiinae). The complete set of fi gures is supplied for all taxa herein dealt with.

The new genus Pseudotetraclipeoides (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Aphodiinae) is diagnosed and the new species Pseudotetraclipeoides tetraodon from Mexico (Chihuahua) is described and fi gured.
