We study J/psi suppression in AB collisions assuming that the charmonium states evolve from small, color transparent configurations. Their interaction with nucleons and nonequilibrated, secondary hadrons is simulated using the microscopic model UrQMD. The Drell-Yan lepton pair yield and the J/psi Drell-Yan ratio are calculated as a function of the neutral transverse energy in Pb+Pb collisions at 160 GeV and found to be in reasonable agreement with existing data.

The production of charmonia in the antiproton-nucleus reactions at plab = 3 − 10 GeV/c is studied within the Glauber model and the generalized eikonal approximation. The main reaction channel is charmonium formation in an antiproton-proton collision. The target mass dependence of the charmonium transparency ratio allows to determine the charmonium-nucleon cross section. The polarization effects in the production of χc2 states are evaluated.
Currently, the structure of the X(3872) meson is unknown. Different competing models of the exotic state X(3872) exist, including the possibilities that this state is either a mesonic molecule with dominating D0D¯ ∗0 + c.c. composition, a tetraquark, or a -gluon hybrid state. It is expected that the X(3872) state is rather strongly coupled to the channel and, therefore, can be produced in and collisions at PANDA. We propose to test the hypothetical molecular structure of by studying the D or D¯⁎ stripping reactions on a nuclear residue.
An incoming or outgoing hadron in a hard collision with large momentum transfer gets squeezed in the transverse direction to its momentum. In the case of nuclear targets, this leads to the reduced interaction of such hadrons with surrounding nucleons which is known as color transparency (CT). The identification of CT in exclusive processes on nuclear targets is of significant interest not only by itself but also due to the fact that CT is a necessary condition for the applicability of factorization for the description of the corresponding elementary process. In this paper we discuss the semiexclusive processes A(e,e′π+) , A(π−,l−l+) and A(γ,π−p) . Since CT is closely related to hadron formation mechanism, the reduced interaction of ’pre-hadrons’ with nucleons is a common feature of generic high-energy inclusive processes on nuclear targets, such as hadron attenuation in deep inelastic scattering (DIS). We will discuss the novel way to study hadron formation via slow neutron production induced by a hard photon interaction with a nucleus. Finally, the opportunity to study hadron formation effects in heavy-ion collisions in the NICA regime will be considered.
Last year the E866-group of the Fermilab measured the xF dependence of J/Psi and 2 suppression in pA collisions. We discuss two of the effects found in that experiment with regard to color coherence effects: the di erent suppression of the J/Psi and the 2 at xF < 0 and the significant suppression of both at large xF . The small xF regions is dominated by fully formed charmonium states and thus enables us to discuss the formation time and the cross section of the different charmonium states. In the large xF region the interaction of the charmonium states with nuclear matter has to be described by partonic degrees of freedom, because in that kinematic domain the formation time is much larger than the nuclear radii. The understanding of this region will be crucial for the interpretation of the data of the future heavy ion colliders RHIC and LHC.
The hard contributions to the heavy quarkonium-nucleon cross sections are calculated based on the QCD factorization theorem and the nonrelativistic quarkonium model. We evaluate the nonperturbative part of these cross sections which dominates at psNN 20 GeV at the Cern Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) and becomes a correction at psNN 6 TeV at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). J/psi production at the CERN SPS is well described by hard QCD, when the larger absorption cross sections of the states predicted by QCD are taken into account. We predict an A-dependent polarization of the states. The expansion of small wave packets is discussed.
A model for the production of quarkonium states in the midrapidity region at RHIC and LHC energy range is presented which explores well understood properties of QCD only. An increase of the quarkonium hadronisation time with the initial energy leads to a gradual change of the most important phenomena from fixed target- to collider-energies. We evaluate nuclear e ects in the quarkonium production due to medium modification of the momentum distribution of the heavy quarks produced in the hard interactions, i.e. due to the broadening of the transverse momentum distribution. Other nuclear effects, i.e. nuclear shadowing and parton energy loss, are also evaluated.
We discuss the new data for the production of the psi meson in pA collisions at 450 GeV at CERNSPS (of the NA50-collaboration) [1]. We extract from the CERN data sigma(psi'N) 8 mb under the assumption that the psi is produced as a result of the space-time evolution of a point-like c¯c pair which expands with time to the full size of the charmonium state. In the analysis we assume the existence of a relationship between the distribution of color in a hadron and the cross section of its interaction with a nucleon. However, our result is rather sensitive to the pattern of the expansion of the wave packet and significantly larger values of sigma(psi'N)are not ruled out by the data. We show that recent CERN data confirm the suggestion of ref. [2] that color fluctuations of the strengths in charmonium-nucleon interaction are the major source of suppression of the J/psi yield as observed at CERN in both pA and AA collisions.
Exciting new scientific opportunities are presented for the PANDA detector at the High Energy Storage Ring in the redefined p¯¯¯p(A) collider mode, HESR-C, at the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) in Europe. The high luminosity, L∼1031 cm−2 s−1, and a wide range of intermediate and high energies, sNN−−−√ up to 30 GeV for p¯¯¯p(A) collisions will allow to explore a wide range of exciting topics in QCD, including the study of the production of excited open charm and bottom states, nuclear bound states containing heavy (anti)quarks, the interplay of hard and soft physics in the dilepton production, probing short-range correlations in nuclei, and the exploration of the early, complete p¯¯¯-p- annihilation phase, where an initially pure Yang–Mills gluon plasma is formed.
