Biema Huo & Zhao gen. nov., a new flower fly genus (Diptera, Syrphidae) from China (2022)

A new flower fly genus (Diptera, Syrphidae), Biema Huo & Zhao gen. nov. from China is described based on two new species: Biema wanglangensis Huo & Zhao gen. et sp. nov. (designated as type-species) and Biema qilianensis Huo & Liu gen. et sp. nov. The new genus can easily be distinguished by the following morphological features: head, mesonotum and scutellum black; postpronotum without pile; metasternum not reduced, posterior margin shallowly concave; katepisternum only with ventral pile patches; alula narrow, as wide as basal width of cell c; male postabdomen conspicuously more swollen than other segments, surstylus and postgonite complex, phallus unsegmented. The results of our Bayesian inference and Maximum Likelihood analysis based on sequences of the Cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene, as well as the species delimitation tests, support the separation of Biema Huo & Zhao gen. nov. from its related taxa. Additionally, an identification key to the genera of the tribes Bacchini and Melanostomini occurring in China is provided.
A new species of the genus Milesia Latreille (Diptera: Syrphidae) from Crete (2022)

Milesia cretica Bot & van Steenis sp. nov. is described from the Island of Crete, Greece. An identification key to all the European species of Milesia Latreille, 1804 is provided, together with DNA barcodes to distinguish the new species.
New species of Myolepta Newman, 1838 (Diptera, Syrphidae) from the Indomalayan Realm (2022)

Three new species of Myolepta Newman, 1838 are described from Thailand (M. iota sp. nov.), Laos (M. diaphora sp. nov.) and Indonesia (M. geras sp. nov. from Java), and new records of Myolepta petiolata Thompson, 1971 from Thailand are also provided. Diagnoses, illustrations and known distributional data are given. In addition, the generic affinities and subdivision of Myolepta are discussed based on these newly described taxa.
The genus Afrosyrphus Curran (Diptera, Syrphidae), with a description of a new species (2020)

The flower fly genus Afrosyrphus Curran, 1927 (Diptera, Syrphidae) is revised and a new species, Afrosyrphus schmuttereri sp. nov., from Kenya and Uganda is described. Diagnoses, illustrations, DNA barcodes and known distributional data are provided for the two species of this genus, as well as an identification key. A critical review of the published literature is also provided.
Flower flies (Diptera, Syrphidae) of French Polynesia, with the description of two new species (2018)

The flower flies (Diptera, Syrphidae) of French Polynesia are revised. A total of nine syrphid species were recorded from the five archipelagos of French Polynesia. Among them are two species new to science, Allograpta jacqi Mengual & Ramage sp. nov. and Melanostoma polynesiotes Mengual & Ramage sp. nov., and a new record for this country, Syritta aenigmatopatria Hardy, 1964. We provide DNA barcodes for all flower fly species of French Polynesia, making the syrphid fauna of this country the first one in the world to be entirely barcoded. New data on biology, flowers visited and some taxonomic notes are provided. An identification key for the species of Syrphidae in French Polynesia is given, as well as an identification key for the species of Melanostoma Schiner, 1860 in the Australasian and Oceanian Regions.
Revision of the morphology, phylogenetic relationships, behaviour and diversity of the Iberian and Italian ant-like Tachydromia Meigen, 1803 (Diptera: Hybotidae) (2021)

Phylogenetic inference, based on five molecular markers (COI, 28S, AATS, 12S, PGD), corroborates the synonymy of the flightless genera Pieltainia Arias, 1919 and Ariasella Gil, 1923 with Tachydromia Meigen, 1803. The secondary structure of the 28S rRNA gene is used for the first time in this family to align the multiple sequences. Molecular and morphological data are largely congruent for all known species of flightless Tachydromia. This paper treats ten western Mediterranean species (nine Iberian and one Italian) in detail, including the description of four new species: T. ebejeri Gonçalves, Grootaert & Andrade sp. nov., T. stenoptera Gonçalves, Grootaert & Andrade sp. nov., T. cantabrica Gonçalves, Grootaert & Andrade sp. nov. and T. nigrohirta Gonçalves, Grootaert & Andrade sp. nov. The male of Tachydromia pieltaini (Gil Collado, 1936) and the female of Tachydromia apterygon Plant & Deeming, 2006 are described for the first time, while a lectotype is assigned to Tachydromia pandellei (Séguy, 1941). A key to all non-macropterous Tachydromia is supplied. Knowledge on the geographic distribution of most species is considerably enhanced. The mating behaviour of Tachydromia semiaptera (Gil Collado, 1923) and Tachydromia iberica (Arias, 1919) is documented for the first time, and we propose a change in the definition of terms apterous and micropterous to properly accommodate the diversity of wing states in this cluster of species.
