Nocturnal multi-species roosts of Cicindelidae (Coleoptera) in a Neotropical lowland rainforest (2021)
Kirmse, Susan ; Wiesner, Jürgen
Tiger beetles (Coleoptera: Cicindelidae) are frequent predators on the forest floor of the Amazon rainforest. We report on five diurnal sympatric tiger beetle species belonging to the genera Odontocheila Laporte de Castelnau and Poecilochila Rivalier in a terra firme rainforest in South Venezuela. We observed adult beetles for a full year and monitored their nocturnal roosts along two forest paths during the rainy season in 1998. We found up to four species communally roosting on low vegetation along the paths during the night. Multi-species roosts were more often observed than conspecific communal roosts. Although the individual composition of the nocturnal roosts changed frequently, distinct plants were used for several days to weeks. The most individual-rich roosts comprised 10 or 11 adult tiger beetles roosting on one leaf. Observed nocturnal roosts were dominated by O. angulipenis W. Horn and O. margineguttata (Dejean). Most mixed roosts included O. confusa (Dejean), O. angulipenis and O. margineguttata. Low abundances and size differences possibly facilitate the coexistence of these five tiger beetle species. The advantage of communal roosting during the rainy season is probably the reinforcement of their chemical defense.
Notes on the tiger beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Cicindelinae) of Brunei Darussalam : 137. Contribution towards the knowledge of Cicindelinae (2017)
Damken, Claas ; Wiesner, Jürgen ; Wahab, Rodzay Abdul
Distributional records of the 30 tiger beetle species and subspecies (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Cicindelinae) known for Brunei Darussalam are given together with habitus photos for 21 species. Neocollyris (Neocollyris) labiomaculata (Horn, 1892), Neocollyris (Neocollyris) emarginata (Dejean, 1825), Therates spectabilis fl avissimus Brouerius van Nidek, 1957, Heptodonta analis s. str. (Fabricius, 1801), Cosmodela velata (Bates, 1872), Lophyra (s. str.) fuliginosa (Dejean, 1826), Cylindera (Leptinomera) fi ligera (Bates, 1878), Myriochila (s. str.) specularis brevipennis (Horn, 1897), Abroscelis tenuipes araneipes (Schaum, 1863) and Callytron doriai (Horn, 1897) are reported for the fi rst time for the Sultanate.
Cylindera (Conidera) mindoroana sp. n. (Coleoptera: Cicindelidae), a new tiger beetle species from the Philippines (2018)
Zettel, Herbert ; Wiesner, Jürgen
Conidera Rivalier, 1961 is a well-defined subgenus of tiger beetles (Coleoptera: Cicindelidae) hitherto only known from two species endemic to the island of Luzon. This paper describes the first species from Mindoro, with a doubtful record from Mindanao. Cylindera (Conidera) mindoroana Zettel and Wiesner, new species, differs strongly by an unusual shape of the female’s elytra. A diagnosis for Conidera and a key to the species of this subgenus is presented.
Two new genera and species of tiger beetles from Baltic amber (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Cicindelinae) (2017)
Wiesner, Jürgen ; Will, Kipling ; Schmidt, Joachim
Two fossil tiger beetle species (Coleoptera, Carabidae, Cicindelinae) are described from Eocene Baltic amber using light microscopic and X-ray microscopic techniques. Both species are considered representatives of the subtribe Iresina Rivalier, 1971 due to the shared combination of character states: glabrous head, six labral and four suborbital setae, and glabrous pronotum. Palaeopronyssiformia groehni Wiesner, Will, and Schmidt, new genus, new species, is characterized by a glabrous and furrowed head with six labral setae, large eyes, presence of two supraorbital setae on each side, mandibles with two teeth of the incisor region, and a glabrous and furrowed pronotum. Palaeoiresina cassolai Wiesner, Will, and Schmidt, new genus, new species, is characterized by a unicolored, undentated labrum, mandibles with two teeth of the incisor region, glabrous head with six labral setae, two clypeal setae, two supraorbital setae on each side, and a glabrous pronotum, mesepisternum, mesepimeron, and metepisternum. The species described here represent the only known tiger beetle fossils preserved in Baltic amber.
The chennelli group of the Genus Therates Latreille (Coleoptera: Cicindelidae) 114. Contribution towards the knowledge of Cicindelidae (2013)
Wiesner, Jürgen
A key is provided for the twelve taxonomic groups within the genus Therates Latreille (Coleoptera: Cicindelidae). The chennelli group is reviewed here and a key to the 53 species known for this group is provided. Each species is illustrated, and a detailed description of its morphology and distributional records are provided. Therates khaoyaii, Th. pearsoni, Th. safraneki, Th. schuelei and Th. sigridgeissleri are described as new to science. Therates differens Sawada and Wiesner, 1999 is placed into synonymy under Th. concinnus Gestro, 1888. Therates tonkinensis kubani Wiesner, 1988 is placed into synonymy under Th. tonkinensis Horn, 1902 and Th. belokobylskiyi Matalin and Wiesner, 2006 is placed into synonymy under Th. haucki Moravec and Wiesner, 2001. Lectotypes are designated for Th. waagenorum Horn, 1900, Th. clavicornis Horn, 1902, Th. tonkinensis Horn, 1902 and Th. annandalei Horn, 1908. Therates baolocensis Wiesner, 1996 is elevated to species rank.
Micromentignatha geberti, a new tiger beetle species from Australia (Coleoptera: Cicindelidae) (2021)
Wiesner, Jürgen
Micromentignatha geberti (Coleoptera: Cicindelidae), new species, is described. It is distinguished from the other members of the genus by its larger body size and shape of elytral maculation.
A new genus and species of tiger beetle, Pseudocollyris shooki (Coleoptera: Cicindelidae), from Yunnan, China (2021)
Bi, Wen-Xuan ; Wiesner, Jürgen
A new genus, Pseudocollyris Bi and Wiesner, is established for the new species Pseudocollyris shooki Bi and Wiesner (Coleoptera: Cicindelidae), from Western Yunnan, China. A description, diagnostic features and illustrations of habitus are provided.
Thopeutica petertaylori, a new tiger beetle species (Coleoptera: Cicindelidae) from Mindanao, Philippines (2019)
Medina, Milton Norman D. ; Cabras, Analyn A. ; Wiesner, Jürgen
Thopeutica (Thopeutica) petertaylori Medina, Cabras and Wiesner (Coleoptera: Cicindelidae), new species, is described from the Cagan river, New Bataan, Mindanao. It is characterized by the metallic ground colour of the elytra, prominent middle tooth in the labrum, and bottle-shaped aedeagus with apical hook.
