The following changes in nomenclature of some species of Amblyeems Thunberg, 1815, are proposed: A) Elevated to new taxonomic status- A. insuturatus (pic, 1902) from (Spennophagus subflavidus var.insuturatus); A. luteolineatus (pic, 1929) from (Spennophagus luteonotatus var .luteolineatus);A. paulonotatus (pic, 1906) from (Spennophagus luteonotatus var.paulonotatus). B) New synonymy-A. dispar(Sharp, 1885)(=Spermophagus longissimus Pic, 1902; =S. earyoborifonnis Pic, 1910; =S. guyanensis Pic, 1917; S.pieeosuturalis Pic, 1927; =S. earaeasensis Pic, 1954); A. gounellei (pic. 1902)(=S. eurtus Pic, 1911; =S. basipennis Pic, 1936); A. insuturatus (pic, 1902)(=A. woleotti Kingsolver, 1970;A.jatayensis (Pic, 1902)(=S.jatayensis var. bieolorieeps Pic, 1955; =S.jatayensis var. hahnelli Pic, 1955; A. IIwltimaculatus (pic, 1902)( =S. minasensis Pic, 1918); A. perfectus (Sharp, 1885)(=S. maeulatopygus Pic, 1927); A. reticulatus (Jekel, 1855)(=S. rufotestaeeus Pic, 1912);A.luteolineatus (pic, 1929)(=S. multisignatus Pic, 1954). C). Lectotype/s and paralectotype/s are designated for: S. luteonotatus Pic, 1902; S. multimaeulatus Pic, 1902; S. maeulatopygus Pic, 1927; S. subflavidus Pic, 1902; S. trisignatus Sharp, 1885; S.jatayensis Pic, 1902; S. longissimus Pic, 1902; S. earyoborifonnis Pic, 1910; S. dispar Sharp, 1885; S. subflavidusvar. insuturatus Pic, 1902. For all species listed in this paper, we provide a bibliography, label data on type material, sex of types and their repository.
C.D. Johnson (Trans. Amer. Entomol. Soc. 116, 1990:425) described Acanthoscelides manieyi from near Guayaquil, Ecuador, but had no records of host plants for the species. In the collections of the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH), Washington, D.C., are records of this species having been intercepted at U.S. ports of entry in mung beans (Vigna radiata (L.) R. Wilczek var. radiata) from Peru, South America, in 1965, 1970, and 1971. More precise localities are not available. This is the first record for A. manleyi for Peru.
Book Review: Species in the genus Spermophagus are found in all of the Old World regions except Australia. Prior to this fine monograph, the taxonomy was a hodgepodge of local faunal treatments and single species descriptions with few usable keys or illustrations. Now we have available keys to 90 species with full descriptions, geographical distributions, and excellent illustrations of dorsal habitus, male genitalia, and many of the female genital valves.
Only five species of Bruchidae have been recorded from the Dominican Republic D.R) per se although records exist for “Hispaniola” and Haiti. Collections made during a recent trip (1992) by R. Turnbow and M.C. Thomas have added data for five additional species, one of which is a new West Indian record whereas the other three are range extensions of species previously known from the West Indies. Geographical ranges for each species are briefly indicated.
Vincent Golia, Delray Beach, Florida, collected a single female specimen of the tamarind seed beetle, Caryedon serratus, in an orange grove near Homestead. This is the first record of this bruchid for continental United States although the species is recorded from the Hawaiian Islands, and is often intercepted during port inspections.
In 1986, L. Leblanc collected two females of Amblycerus schwarzi in Watson's Hammock, Big Pine Key, Florida, but they remained unidentified until Stewart Peck reared 10 specimens including males and matching females from the drupaceous fruits of Hippomane mancinella L. (manchineel) (Euphorbiaceae) from Big Pine Key. One collection of A. schwarzi from Baracoa, Oriente Prov., Cuba, part of the original type series, was also reared from this host (Kingsolver, 1970:478).
Recent collections have resulted in provisional extensions of distributional ranges of 4 species of Bruchidae. All species of plants listed belong to the Leguminosae (Fabaceae). Acanthoscelides obvelatus Bridwell was recently intercepted at the Miami, Florida, International Airport infesting Phaseolus spp. beans grown in Haiti and Cuba. Previous records for this bruchid include mainland localities in Mexico, Guatemala, and Colombia. No precise localities in the West Indies are known. These collections indicate that this bruchid is probably established on Hispaniola and Cuba.
Records and descriptions are given for the 10 known species in six genera of Bruchidae from the Archipelago including Sennius falcatus New Species and Acanthoscelides rossi New Species. Amblycerus (Spermophagus) insulamm (Blair) is synonymized with Amblycems piurae (Pierce), New Synonymy. Five of the species herein treated are new records for the Archipelago, and 8 of the 10 are also known from mainland South America, principally Ecuador.
