In this retrospective study, case records of clinical forensic examinations and respective investigation records of the police and the public prosecutor’s (state attorney) office along with the resulting verdicts were examined in terms of type and site of injury found and extent of agreement or discrepancy between the story given by the accused party and the medical conclusions drawn from the injury pattern. Particular attention was focussed on the relevance of the expert opinion for the legal assessment through case-specific analysis of the respective verdicts. A total of 118 cases originating from the scope of the Institute of Forensic Medicine, Goethe-University Frankfurt/Main (2002 – 2005) were examined. These included bodily injury, child abuse, sexual compulsion, self-mutilation and injury patterns of individuals under suspicion of attempted or completed manslaughter/homicide. As compared to former studies, the results of this analysis were additionally correlated with the investigation records of the public prosecutor’s office (state attorney) to elucidate the importance of the forensic findings for police investigation and legal evaluation. The forensic examination involved 19 accused and 99 victims. As for the gender distribution of the victims, 51 females and 48 males were encountered. Slight female preponderance was seen in cases of sexual compulsion. The group of accused individuals consisted of 16 males and 3 females. Injuries due to blunt force impact, in particular hematomas involving skull and trunk, dominated as diagnostic findings in cases of bodily injury, sexual offenses and child abuse. In cases with suspected self-mutilation and in examinations of accused perpetrators of manslaughter/homicide scratches and lacerations prevailed. Correlating injury patterns and police inquiries, conclusions drawn from medical findings and results of police investigations were in good agreement in 46 % of the cases, but showed major discrepancies in another 25 %. In the remaining 29 % of the cases, the injury pattern did not allow for a definite expert opinion on the mode of infliction. Nevertheless, a detailed documentation of the medical findings proved to be of substantial value for police investigations. 39 % of the cases resulted in a final verdict, whilst in 59 % of the cases the charge was dismissed. Especially in the ladder forensic expert opinion was of considerable importance, since forensic assessment of injuries could either not be attributed to a certain perpetrator or contributed to the exoneration of the accused. In 2 % the judicial assessment was not available. In 82 % of the cases of child abuse the proceedings were stopped, e.g. since maltreatment could not be assigned to a particular perpetrator. In these cases, it became obvious, that forensic examination and assessment alone does not suffice, but has to be embedded in police investigations to achieve optimal results. Medical conclusions by forensic experts were – almost without any exception – considered in legal assessment and differentiatedly taken into account when weighing the sentence, thus reflecting the objectivity and neutrality of the medical assessment. In synopsis, albeit evidential value of forensic examination is assessed to be high optimal clarification of a case requires integration into the complete spectrum of investigations performed in a case.
Construction and commissioning of a setup to study ageing phenomena in high rate gas detectors

In high-rate heavy-ion experiments, gaseous detectors encounter big challenges in terms of degradation of their performance due to a phenomenon dubbed ageing. In this thesis, a setup for high precision ageing studies has been constructed and commissioned at the GSI detector laboratory. The main objective is the study of ageing phenomena evoked by materials used to build gaseous detectors for the Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at the future Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR).
The precision of the measurement, e.g., of the gain of a gaseous detector, is a key element in ageing studies: it allows to perform the measurement at realistic rates in an acceptable time span. It is well known the accelerating ageing employing high intensity sources might produce misleading results. The primary objective is to build an apparatus which allows very accurate measurements and is thus sensitive to minute degradations in detector performance. The construction and commissioning of the
setup has been carried out in two steps. During the first step of this work, a simpler setup which already existed in the detector laboratory of GSI had been utilised to define all conditions related to ageing studies. The outcome of these studies defined the properties and characteristics that must be met to build and operate a new, sophisticated and precise setup. The already existing setup consisted of two identical Multi Wire Proportional Chambers (MWPCs), a gas mixing station, an 55Fe source, an x-ray generator, an outgassing box and stainless steel tubing. In a first step, the gain and electric field configuration of the MWPCs were simulated by a combination of a gas simulation (Magboltz) and electric field simulation program (Garfield). The performance and operating conditions of the chambers have been thoroughly characterised before utilising them in first preparatory ageing test. The main diagnostic parameter in ageing studies is the detector gain, thus it is mandatory for precise ageing studies to minimise the systematic and statistical variation of the pressure and temperature corrected gain. To achieve the required accuracy, several improvements of the chamber design and the gas system have been implemented. In addition, the temperature measurement has been optimised. During the preparatory tests, several ageing studies have been carried out. The ageing effect of seven materials and gases have been carried out during these tests: RTV-3145, Ar/CO2 gas, Durostone flushed with Ar/Isobutane gas, Vetronit G11, Vetronit G11 contaminated with Micro 3000 and Gerband 705. The results of these studies went into the design of the new sophisticated ageing setup. For example some tests revealed that there was, even after cleaning, a certain level of contamination with "ageing agents" in the existing setup, which made it imperative to ensure a very high level cleanness of all components during the construction of the setup. The curing period of some testing samples like glues or the gas flow rate were found to be very important factors that must be taken into account to obtain comparable results. Very important changes in the chamber design have been made, i.e., the aluminium-Kapton cathodes used in MWPCs have been replaced with multi-wire planes and the fibreglass housing of the chamber has been changed to metal. The second step started with building the new setup which was designed based on the findings from the first step. The new ageing setup consists of three MWPCs, two moving platforms, an 55Fe source, a copper-anode x-ray generator, two outgassing boxes, both flexible and rigid stainless steel tubes. Before fabrication of the chambers, simulations of their electric field and the gain have been done using Magboltz and Garfield programs. After that, the chambers were installed and tested. A 0.3% peak-to-peak residual variation of the corrected gain has been achieved. Finally, the complete setup has been operated with full functionality in no-ageing conditions during one week. This test revealed very stable gain in all three chambers. After that two materials (Gerban 705 and RTV-3145) have been inserted in the two outgassing boxes and tested. They revealed an ageing rate of about 0.3%/mC/cm and 3%/mC/cm respectively. The final test proves the stability and accuracy of the ageing measurements carried out with the ageing setup at the detector laboratory at GSI which is ready to conduct the envisaged systematic ageing studies.
Das Capillary-Leak-Syndrom (CLS) präsentiert sich als plötzlicher Verlust von intravasaler Flüssigkeit ins Interstitium und kann als Komplikation nach einer Stammzelltransplantation (SZT) auftreten. Das Ziel der vorliegenden Studie war es, die CLS-Inzidenz, Risikofaktoren für das Auftreten und den Einfluss auf das Überleben nach SZT in einer pädiatrischen Kohorte allogener SZT-Empfänger zu bestimmen. Wir untersuchten die klinischen Berichte aller Patienten unter 18 Jahren, die in der Abteilung für Stammzelltransplantation der Klinik für Kinder- und Jugendmedizin des Universitätsklinikums Frankfurt am Main zwischen Januar 2002 und Mai 2012 allogen stammzelltransplantiert wurden. 234 Patienten erhielten 275 SZT im oben genannten Zeitraum. In 15 Fällen (5,5 %) entwickelten Patienten ein CLS.
Bedingung für die Vergabe der CLS-Diagnose war das Vorhandensein dieser drei Kriterien: Gewichtszunahme von über 3 % des Körpergewichts in 24 Stunden, positive Ein-/Ausfuhrbilanz trotz Diuretikagabe und Ödeme.
Die Wahrscheinlichkeit, ein CLS zu entwickeln war signifikant höher bei Patienten, die auch unter einer Sepsis litten (p < 0,001). Patienten mit CLS hatten zudem ein höheres Risiko innerhalb der ersten 30 Tage nach SZT an einer GvHD zu erkranken (p = 0,005).
10 der 15 CLS-Patienten mussten intensivmedizinisch behandelt werden.
CLS hängt signifikant mit dem Gesamtüberleben an Tag + 100 und Tag + 365 nach SZT zusammen (p < 0,001), indem es einen starken prädiktiven Faktor für die TRM an Tag + 100 und Tag + 365 nach SZT darstellt (p < 0,001).
CLS ist eine schwere Komplikation bei pädiatrischen SZT-Empfängern. Der biologische Zusammenhang zwischen Sepsis, GvHD und CLS-Entwicklung im Hinblick auf Zytokinfreisetzung und Endothelschaden sollte in weiteren Studien untersucht werden, um neue zielgerichtete Therapien zu unterstützen.
Die Börsenindustrie hat in den vergangenen zwei Jahrzehnten einen signifikanten Wandel durchlaufen - und das nicht nur in Deutschland. Börsen haben schon längst nicht mehr den Charakter vergangener Tage, in denen ihre Mitglieder auf dem Parkett um Aktienpakete und -kurse von inländischen Unternehmen feilschten und an den genossenschaftlich organisierten Handelsplätzen eher eine vertrauliche Clubatmosphäre herrschte. Eine Vielzahl der Börsen hat den Parketthandel abgeschafft, ist selbst an einer Börse gelistet und orientiert sich primär am Shareholder Value und somit an den Interessen einer internationalen Aktionärsbasis. Mittlerweile existieren Börsenplätze, die mehrere Länder umspannen. Der französisch dominierten Euronext kommt hier eine Vorreiterrolle zu. Aber auch andere Börsen, wie die Deutsche Börse und die Schweizer Börse, haben länderübergreifend ihre Derivatehandelsplattformen vereinigt und mit ihrem Jointventure Eurex die umsatzstärkste Derivatebörse der Welt geschaffen. In jüngster Zeit werden nun auch transatlantische Allianzen zwischen amerikanischen und europäischen Börsen angedacht. Sowohl die Strategie der Nasdaq, die bisher eine Sperrminorität von über 25% an der Londoner Börse hält, als auch die der New York Stock Exchange, die eine Fusion mit der Euronext anstrebt, belegen dies. Zudem stehen Börsen mittlerweile in direktem Wettbewerb mit ihren Kunden und ehemaligen Eigentümern, den Finanzintermediären wie Banken und Wertpapierhäuser. Sie konkurrieren um Wertpapieraufträge von Investoren, da Banken nicht mehr jede Order automatisch an sie weiterleiten. Stattdessen versuchen manche Finanzintermediäre, die erhaltenen Investorenaufträge im eigenen Haus mit einer entsprechenden reziproken Order zusammenzuführen, um somit die Geld-Brief Spanne des Wertpapiers als Gewinn einzubehalten. Diese Internalisierung von Auftragsausführungen ist seit einigen Jahren insbesondere in England und Deutschland eine bedeutende Einkommensquelle für Wertpapierhäuser geworden. Gleichzeitig stoßen Börsen immer stärker in Geschäftsbereiche vor, die bislang die Domäne ihrer Kunden repräsentierten. Hier sei der Handel von bestimmten Kreditderivateprodukten genannt, die bisher außerbörslich zwischen großen Wertpapierhäusern gehandelt wurden. Sowohl die Chicago Mercantile Exchange als auch die Eurex planen den Handel dieser Titel auf ihren eigenen Plattformen. Ein weiteres Beispiel ist die vertikale Integration von Wertpapierabwicklungs- und Wertpapierverwahrungsgeschäften. Große internationale Banken wie BNP Paribas, Citigroup und State Street kämpfen hier gegen Börsen um Marktanteile. Wie kam es zu dem hier beschriebenen Wandel? Der entscheidende Katalysator ist der gestiegene Wettbewerbsdruck auf traditionelle Börsen, welcher in vielen Fällen zu einer Umstrukturierung ihrer Organisationsform und Eigentümerstruktur führte. Diese neu ausgerichteten Börsen verstanden sich nun als reguläre, gewinnorientierte Firmen, die nicht mehr in erster Linie ihren Kunden, sondern ihren neuen Eigentümern, den Aktionären, verpflichtet waren. ...
All living organisms exhibit daily fluctuations in biochemical, physiological and behavioural parameters driven by endogenous oscillators, residing in the organism itself. In mammals, the core circadian oscillator is located in the paired suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) of the hypothalamus. Circadian rhythm generation in the SCN depends upon the expression of clock genes interacting in positive and negative transcriptional/translational feedback loops. The SCN governs the timing of peripheral circadian oscillators by neuronal pathways and by neuroendocrine mechanisms. An important neuroendocrine hand of the core circadian oscillator is melatonin, which is produced in and secreted from the pineal gland night by night. The adenohypophysis represents a peripheral circadian oscillator and the secretion of one of its hormones, prolactin, is known to be regulated by melatonin. The aim of the present study was to analyze a putative influence of melatonin on the activity state and diurnal variations of identified cell types in the hypophysis. Particular attention was paid to lactotroph, gonadotroph and pars intermedia cells. Experiments were performed with young male mice of different strains: melatonin-proficient C3H, melatonin-deficient C57BL, melatonin-proficient C3H with targeted deletions of the Mel1a receptor (MelaaBB), Mel1b receptor (MelAAbb) or both receptors (Melaabb). Cells producing prolactin (PRL), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) were immunocytochemically identified and the presence of phosphorylated CREB protein (pCREB) and clock gene protein PER1 was demonstrated by double immunolabeling at different time points during the light/dark cycle in melatonin deficient, melatonin proficient and melatonin receptor knockout mice. Melatonin influence on Prl mRNA levels was investigated by means of in situ hybridization. At night the percentage of lactotroph cells showing a positive nuclear pCREB- and PER1-immunoreaction is significantly smaller in C57BL than in C3H mice. In both mouse strains, the percentage of pCREB –immunoreactive cells is minimal in the early morning and gradually increases to reach a maximum in the late night. PER1 levels show a parallel temporal variation in C3H, but in C57BL, they are drastically reduced in the early afternoon. The percentage of FSH-immunoreactive cells showing pCREB immunoreaction was significantly lower in the melatonin-deficient C57Bl mice than in the melatonin-proficient C3H mice during the second part of the day and during the night. In each strain, the percentage of FSH-immunoreactive cells was lowest at the early morning and gradually increases until the maximum at late night. In wild type (MelAABB) and MelAAbb mice the percentage of lactotroph cells with nuclear pCREB immunoreactions varied significantly over 24 h period, whereas in MelaaBB and Melaabb mice no significant differences were found between the five time points analyzed. The number of Prl mRNA expressing cells was significantly higher in MelaaBB and MelAAbb than in their wild type (MelAABB) littermates. pCREB levels in the pars intermedia did not show rhythmic variation in wild type or Melaabb animals, but wild type mice had higher pCREB levels than Melaabb. The observation that, during darkness, the percentage of lactotroph cells with nuclear pCREB immunoreaction is significantly higher in C3H than in C57BL mice suggests the existence of a distinct cell population that is under the control of melatonin-dependent intrapituitary signaling. Results with melatonin receptor knockout mice indicate that Mel1a and Mel1b melatonin receptors are involved in the control of the activity state of lactotroph cells, but to a differing degree. Analysis of cells expressing Prl mRNA showed that inhibitory action on the Prl expression is mostly mediated through the Mel1a receptor. The significant difference between pCREB immunoreaction in gonadotroph cells of C3H and C57BL mice might suggest that, like lactotrophes, FSH cells represent a heterogeneous population and only a subpopulation is under control of melatonin signaling. The present study is first to show that melatonin signaling also affects pCREB levels in pars intermedia of mice.
