This article is a critical presentation of the study Der Zauber des fernen Königreichs. Carmen Sylvas Pelesch-Märchen/Farmecul regatului îndepãrtat. Poveştile Peleşului, (The Magic of the Faraway Kingdom. Carmen Sylva’s Tales of the Pelesh), edited at the Ibidem publishing house in Frankfurt this year. The author proves that – contrary to some opinions in current literary criticism, according to which the works of the queen poet were but recorded and retold Romanian folk tales and legends – Carmen Sylva’s writings are personal works with intrinsic literary value, where themes and motifs from the folklore and mythology or from the Romanian and occidental literature are used only as pre-texts. Silvia Zimmermann’s merit is a significant one, namely that of rediscovering Carmen Sylva who has not only been a creator, but also an important mediator between the Romanian and the German culture.
The present study refers to a working method of the writer Joachim Wittstock from Sibiu, namely to the use of the factual (published or unpublished works, quotations, press releases, etc.) for creating literary works, i.e. fiction. Horst Schuller uses examples from the novels Ascheregen (1985) and Bestätigt und besiegelt (2003) as well as from the volume of stories Keulemann und schlafende Muse (2005). Beyond the factual-fictional structure of the texts the author stresses elements of interculturalism, intertextuality and of what is understood as “high style” and the esthetic character of Joachim Wittstock’s works
The aim of the present paper is to show how intertextuality and poetological reflection are interrelated in Josef Winkler’s later works (starting with the short novel Natura morta published in 2001). After a short presentation of the author, the main motifs of his novels and his specific prose style which draws on mannerist tropes in order to distance itself from mimetic, realistic narrative, the paper offers a brief overview of the different types of intertextuality Winkler makes use of in his writing. The last part of the paper focuses on a short chapter from the novel Leichnam, seine Familie belauernd (2003), analyzing the intertextual references to Jean Genet in both their (auto)biographical and narratological dimension.
This essay deals with the intertextuality of the 21st century novel Zaira by the Swiss-Romanian writer Cătălin Dorian Florescu and the 21th century tragedy Zaire by Voltaire. It is analysed whether the name of the female protagonist Zaira is used by Florescu by accident or whether he refers to Voltaire. Furthermore, the differences between East and West brought up in the novel and the tragedy are examined. There are some similarities to be found as to the topoi of the selling respectively buying of women or fate deciding about the life of the protagonists. However, in the author’s opinion they don`t justify the assumption that Florescu knows the text by Voltaire or even uses it in his own novel.
The main issue of this paper is to analyse the literary motif „Effi Briest“ as it is found in the novel „Effi Briest“ by Fontane, Christine Brückners speechless monologues of angry women and in Rolf Hochhuths drama „Effis Nacht“ related altogether to the real protagonist Elisabeth von Ardenne and her more than unusual life. While Fontane and Brückner depicture a young helpless woman, restraint by society, unable to free herself but dying of grief, Hochhuth refers to the biography of Else von Ardenne whose life lasted almost a century. During her monologue the fictional Else comments not only on historical events like the two World Wars but also in intertextual remarks on Fontane’s novel based on her own biography.
