This volume is a collection of fully analyzed texts of the Mvtwang dialect of the Rawang language collected as part of fieldwork on the language. The Rawang language belongs to a larger grouping of languages/ dialects we can call Dulong/Rawang or Dulong/Rawang/Anong spoken on both sides of the ClUna/Myanmar (Burma) border just south and east of Tibet. In China, the people who speak this language for the most part live in Gongshan county of Yunnan province, and belong to either what is known as the "Dulong" nationality (pop. 5816 according to the 1990 census), or to one part (roughly 6,000 people) of the Nu nationality (those who live along the upper reaches of the Nu River-the part of the Salween within China). Another subgroup of the Nu people, those who live along the lower reaches of the Nu river (in China), speak a language called "Anong" which seems to be the same as, or closely related to, the Kwinpang dialect spoken in Myanmar, so should also be considered a dialect ofDulong/Rawang. Within Myanmar, the people who speak the Rawang language (possibly up to 100,000 people) live in northern Kachin State, particularly along the Mae Hka ('Nmai Hka) and Maeli Hka (Mali Hka) river valleys. In the past they had been called "Hkanung" or "Nung", and have often been considered to be a sub-group of the Kachin (Jinghpaw). Among themselves they have had no general term for the entire group; they use their respective clan names to refer to themselves. This is true also of those who live in China, although these people have accepted the exonym "Dulong" (or "Taron", or "Trung"), a name they were given because they mostly live in the valley of the Dulong (Taron/Trung) River.

Both Percy and Herder establish popular poetry within the horizon of modern literature, accentuating its strangeness compared to learned poetry or "Kunstdichtung". But there is a decisive difference between Percy's and Herder's handling of this strangeness. Percy tries to bridge the gap by way of historico-philological explanation and reconstruction. In the „Reliques“, he not only chooses, corrects and groups his poems. He also adds four historical essays to his edition […] and provides numerous introductory remarks, footnotes, bibliographical references, and glossaries of archaic words and idioms. Contrary to Percy, Herder preserves and even enforces the strangeness of the texts. On the other hand, he also wants his reader to bridge the gap […] through the modern reader's empathic grasping of the supposed archaic face-to-face-communication between poet-singer and audience. In order to reach this goal, the reader must try to supplement the fragmentary text through the intuition of the authentic situation in which the text originally was communicated. Such a supplement seems possible because popular poetry deals with stock situations common to all people. […] In order to reach this goal, by the way, Herder simulates in the „Auszug aus einem Briefwechsel“ and in the introduction to the „Volkslieder“ the same attitude which he wants to convey to his readers. Both essays display the rhetoric of an emphatic, fragmentary and consensual dialogue between friends.
August Wilhelm Schlegels frühe Volkspoesieauffassung im Kontext mit der Schiller-Bürger-Debatte

Schiller hatte - wie zu jener Zeit üblich anonym - in der "Jenaischen Allgemeinen Literaturzeitung" Bürgers neue Gedichtausgabe einer scharfen Kritik unterzogen. Die zweite erweiterte Ausgabe war 1789 erschienen und hatte Bürger neuen Ruhm gebracht. Er befand sich kurz vor dem Erscheinen in einer schweren Krise. Sowohl seine Stellung als Gelehrter an der Universität als auch seine persönlichen Probleme, die aus der dritten Ehe erwuchsen, hatten bei ihm zu einer tiefen Resignation geführt.(1) Umso wichtiger war ihm in dieser Zeit die Freundschaft zu dem jungen A. W. Schlegel, und der Erfolg des endlich erschienenen Buches war nötige Stimulanz für neue poetische Produktion. Im Wetteifer von Lehrer und Schüler entstanden zahlreiche Sonette, eine Dichtungsform, die beide damit in Deutschland neu belebten. In dieser Sammlung befindet sich auch "Das Hohe Lied von der Einzigen", welches Schlegel später rezensiert. In der Vorrede spricht Bürger mit höchster Anerkennung von Schlegel und bezeichnet ihn als seinen "Lieblingsjünger". Er rückt das Schlegelsche Sonett "Das Lieblichste" mit ein und ermuntert dadurch in erheblichem Maße seinen Schüler. Für uns ist von Bedeutung, daß Bürger Schlegel "große(s) poetische(s) Talent, Geschmack und Kritik, mit mannigfaltigen Kenntnissen verbunden" (2) bescheinigt. Wir dürfen also auf größte Übereinstimmung beider rechnen, und die Reaktion des Jüngeren in der Schiller-Bürger-Debatte ist nicht nur Ausdruck der Verehrung des Schülers für seinen Lehrer, sondern in großem Maße auch Verständnis und Bewunderung für die Haltung dieses aufrechten Demokraten angesichts der vielfältigen Anfeindungen in Göttingen.
