With reference to the Marx Seminars at the University of São Paulo, this chapter discusses the creation of a specific tradition in the social sciences that marks a crucial moment in the history of postcolonial and decolonial studies. By means of the concept of periphery, I reconstruct how this tradition refuted temporal and stadial dualisms. Moreover, I argue that the development of this new perspective in the social sciences must be understood in terms of its efforts to rethink Marx but also, and more importantly, by the need to rethink Brazil's place in the world. Following this thread, I analyse Roberto Schwarz's work as paradigmatic for a proper understanding of the centrality of the concept of periphery in these discussions.
The present study aims to investigate how foreign language learners at the German for Academic Purposes (GAP) program at a Brazilian federal university interact in their mother tongue about their motivations to learn a foreign language as well as their motivations to participate in study abroad programs. Data were collected using focus group methodology with three focus groups of six students each (A1, A2 and B1 levels). We chose to analyze the A1 group. We conducted metaphor-led discourse analysis of the data in order to examine metaphors and metonymies, which emerged in the focus group interactions. We were able to identify the presence of systematic metaphors such as learning is hard work and learning is jumping hurdles, intertwined with conceptual metaphors such as education is a journey and difficulties are weights, which point at the motivation for learning verbalized by Brazilian foreign language learners who took part in the study.
Die Autorin behandelt am Beispiel Brasilien das universelle Thema der Gewalt gegen Frauen in einem international vergleichenden und interkulturell kommunikativen Zusammenhang. Wichtiges Anliegen ihrer Fallstudie zur Gewalt gegen Frauen ist deutlich zu machen, dass die kontextbedingt aktive Bewegung der Frauen wider Gewalt in Brasilien sich nicht nur von Aktionen und Diskursen aus dem internationalen Bereich inspiriert hat, sondern einen beachtenswerten eigenen Beitrag leistet, von dem auch andere Frauenbewegungen lernen könnten. Voraussetzung hierzu ist allerdings, dass in allen diesen Gesellschaften, denen innerhalb der stratifizierten globalen Zusammenhänge unterschiedlicher Status zugewiesen wird, ein interkulturell kommunikativer Lernprozess stattfindet. In der Einleitung zu dieser Studie wird auf die spezifische Problematik des Themas hingewiesen, die Untersuchungsmethode und die eigene Argumentationsweise vorgestellt, die eng mit der Motivation zur Behandlung des Themas verwoben ist. Im ersten Kapitel wird die Gewalt gegen Frauen als zugleich universales wie auch partikulares Problem diskutiert, und dementsprechend die divergierenden Definitionen der Gewalt gegen Frauen, die vielfältigen Ansätze zum Verständnis von Frauen aus verschiedenen Gesellschaften und schließlich die Vielfalt der Erfahrungen von Frauen gegenüber Gewalt im Licht der interkulturellen Kommunikation vorgestellt und kritisch analysiert. Im zweiten Kapitel werden die diskursiv analytischen Interpretationen der Gewalt gegen Frauen im Licht der interkulturellen Kommunikation behandelt. Die Autorin knüpft an das diskursive Modell der Bedürfnisinterpretation von Nancy Fraser an und wendet es als methodischer Ansatz zur Interpretation der Gewalt gegen Frauen an. Sie weist auf die gesellschaftspolitischen und kulturellen Grenzen dieses Modells (auf die nördliche Hemisphäre beschränkt) hin und versucht es im Lichte des Ansatzes von Patrick Dias zu interkulturellem Lernen im Kontext der international ungleichen Machtstrukturen kritisch weiterzuentwickeln. Das dritte Kapitel analysiert die relevanten gesellschaftlichen Bedingungen mit ihren diskursiven Konstruktionen zum Verständnis von Frauen und deren Stellung im spezifischen Kontext Brasiliens. Das vierte Kapitel stellt die brasilianische Frauenbewegung wider Gewalt gegen Frauen in ihren historischen Zusammenhängen dar: von ihren Anfängen über deren Strategien in den Achtzigern bis im ausgehenden zwanzigsten Jahrhundert hinein; und es schließt mit den Diskussionen im 21. Jahrhundert ab, die verstärkt unter der Metapher der Cidadania (Aufbau der Zivilgesellschaft) steht. Kapitel fünf fasst die Ergebnisse der Untersuchung zusammen und führt den in der Studie angewandten diskursiv analytischen Ansatz im Rahmen der interkulturell immer noch bestehenden herrschaftlichen Kommunikationsstruktur mit einem Plädoyer für ein interkulturelles Lernen, das die globalen Ungleichheiten nicht verkennt, weiter.
Walter Salles is probably the most widely known Brazilian director and producer. This article offers a portrait of his work over the last two decades as part of the cinematic and cultural changes that took place in Brazil. It starts with a historical overview of Brazilian film history and will then take a closer look at the films directed by Salles and his activities as producer. By looking at the evolution of the Brazilian film industry in the last ten to fifteen years in terms of market structures as well as aesthetic qualities, two major references become apparent: the more (but not only) commercial oriented productions of Globo Filmes, which often meet public taste and rely on a well-proven television language; second, the movies of Walter Salles as well as the films produced by Videofilmes, a company run and founded in 1987 by him and his brother, the documentarist João Moreira Salles. Videofilmes not only fosters many of the somewhat marginal, smaller film projects, but also serves as support for more artistically orientated movies.
As police with tear gas and water cannons fuel unrest across Turkey, it seems that many eyes are wearily cast over Europe’s favourite neighbour, soon to join the list of potentially unstable Middle-East nations. Yet even as Erdogan’s messy power play brings Turkey’s democratic survivability into question, the nation’s solar energy industry is breaking new ground and massive nuclear power capacity is quietly being prepared to relieve the nation’s energy import dependency. In Brazil, riots breaking out over a transport price hike reflect the pressures of inflation and widespread corruption: an outburst fuelled by a long history of mismanagement and ineffective policy at state and federal levels. Nevertheless, big plans are underway for the expanding of Brazil’s power grid, set to underwrite national economic growth into 2030 and beyond. Behind these gruelling scenes of democratic upheaval, lie two distinct cases of energy policy in the making, in spite of overt political turmoil. This post highlights two instances of critical energy policy, unfolding behind the scenes.
This paper investigates the concept(s) of intercultural competence held by undergraduate students from teacher education courses in English and German languages. To this end, first and fourth year undergraduates of English and German from a federal university in Rio de Janeiro answered two versions of a questionnaire designed to lead students to inductively formulate what they understood as intercultural competence and how they would help their future students develop this competence. Responses were submitted to content analysis and the four groups were compared. Results show that students of English and German who participated in this study hold different perspectives on intercultural competence and one of the reasons for that may be attributed to their educational background
