Midrapidity open charm spectra from direct reconstruction of D0(D0-bar)-->K± pi ± in d+Au collisions and indirect electron-positron measurements via charm semileptonic decays in p+p and d+Au collisions at sqrt[sNN]=200 GeV are reported. The D0(D0-bar) spectrum covers a transverse momentum (pT) range of 0.1<pT<3 GeV/c, whereas the electron spectra cover a range of 1<pT<4 GeV/c. The electron spectra show approximate binary collision scaling between p+p and d+Au collisions. From these two independent analyses, the differential cross section per nucleon-nucleon binary interaction at midrapidity for open charm production from d+Au collisions at BNL RHIC is d sigma NNcc-bar/dy=0.30±0.04(stat)±0.09(syst) mb. The results are compared to theoretical calculations. Implications for charmonium results in A+A collisions are discussed.
We find that on average consumers chose the contract that ex post minimized their net costs. A substantial fraction of consumers (about 40%) still chose the ex post sub-optimal contract, with some incurring hundreds of dollars of avoidable interest costs. Nonetheless, the probability of choosing the sub-optimal contract declines with the dollar magnitude of the potential error, and consumers with larger errors were more likely to subsequently switch to the optimal contract. Thus most of the errors appear not to have been very costly, with the exception that a small minority of consumers persists in holding substantially sub-optimal contracts without switching. A systematic, literature-based compilation of bryophytes of Réunion Island has been made, with the additional examination of herbarium specimens. The list of 148 genera and 404 species and infraspecific taxa of mosses and 87 genera and 241 species and infraspecific taxa of hepatics and hornworts are here reported, including four mosses reported as new to Réunion.
Spatial interpolation of rain gauge data is important in forcing of hydrological simulations or evaluation of weather predictions, for example. The spatial density of available data sites is often changing with time. This paper investigates the application of statistical distance, like one minus common variance of time series, between data sites instead of geographical distance in interpolation. Here, as a typical representative of interpolation methods the inverse distance weighting interpolation is applied and the test data is daily precipitation observed in Austria. Choosing statistical distance instead of geographical distance in interpolation of an actually available coarse observation network yields more robust interpolation results at sites of a denser network with actually lacking observations. The performance enhancement is in or close to mountainous terrain. This has the potential to parsimoniously densify the currently available observation network. Additionally, the success further motivates search for conceptual rain-orography interaction models as components of spatial rain interpolation algorithms in mountainous terrain.
Excessive accumulation of the extracellular matrix is a hallmark of many inflammatory and fibrotic diseases, including those of the kidney. This study addresses the question whether NO, in addition to inhibiting the expression of MMP-9, a prominent metalloprotease expressed by mesangial cells, additionally modulates expression of its endogenous inhibitor TIMP-1. We demonstrate that exogenous NO has no modulatory effect on the extracellular TIMP-1 content but strongly amplifies the early increase in cytokine-induced TIMP-1 mRNA and protein levels. We examined whether transforming growth factor beta (TGFbeta), a potent profibrotic cytokine, is involved in the regulation of NO-dependent TIMP-1 expression. Experiments utilizing a pan-specific neutralizing TGFbeta antibody demonstrate that the NO-induced amplification of TIMP-1 is mediated by extracellular TGFbeta. Mechanistically, NO causes a rapid increase in Smad-2 phosphorylation, which is abrogated by the addition of neutralizing TGFbeta antisera. Similarly, the NO-dependent increase in Smad-2 phosphorylation is prevented in the presence of an inhibitor of TGFbeta-RI kinase, indicating that the NO-dependent activation of Smad-2 occurs via the TGFbeta-type I receptor. Furthermore, activation of the Smad signaling cascade by NO is corroborated by the NO-dependent increase in nuclear Smad-4 level and is paralleled by increased DNA binding of Smad-2/3 containing complexes to a TIMP-1-specific Smad-binding element (SBE). Reporter gene assays revealed that NO activates a 0.6-kb TIMP-1 gene promoter fragment as well as a TGFbeta-inducible and SBE-driven control promoter. Chromatin immunoprecipitation analysis also demonstrated DNA binding activity of Smad-3 and Smad-4 proteins to the TIMP-1-specific SBE. Finally, by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, we demonstrated that NO causes a rapid increase in TGFbeta(1) levels in cell supernatants. Together, these experiments demonstrate that NO by induction of the Smad signaling pathway modulates TIMP-1 expression.
Under a conventional policy rule, a central bank adjusts its policy rate linearly according to the gap between inflation and its target, and the gap between output and its potential. Under "the opportunistic approach to disinflation" a central bank controls inflation aggressively when inflation is far from its target, but concentrates more on output stabilization when inflation is close to its target, allowing supply shocks and unforeseen fluctuations in aggregate demand to move inflation within a certain band. We use stochastic simulations of a small-scale rational expectations model to contrast the behavior of output and inflation under opportunistic and linear rules. Klassifikation: E31, E52, E58, E61. In many languages, a passive-like meaning may be obtained through a noncanonical passive construction. The get passive (1b) in English, the se faire passive (2b) in French and the kriegen passive (3b) in German represent typical manifestations. This squib focuses on the behavior of the get-passive in English and discusses a number of restrictions associated with it as well as the status of get.
