Gravitational radiation from ultra high energy cosmic rays in models with large extra dimensions
(2006)
The effects of classical gravitational radiation in models with large extra dimensions are investigated for ultra high energy cosmic rays (CRs). The cross sections are implemented into a simulation package (SENECA) for high energy hadron induced CR air showers. We predict that gravitational radiation from quasi-elastic scattering could be observed at incident CR energies above 10^9 GeV for a setting with more than two extra dimensions. It is further shown that this gravitational energy loss can alter the energy reconstruction for CR energies E_CR > 5 10^9 GeV.
n this article we will focus on the appearance of the hadron-quark phase transition and the formation of strange matter in the interior region of the hypermassive neutron star and its conjunction with the spectral properties of the emitted gravitational waves (GWs). A strong hadron-quark phase transition might give rise to a mass-radius relation with a twin star shape and we will show in this article that a twin star collapse followed by a twin star oscillation is feasible. If such a twin star collapse would happen during the postmerger phase it will be imprinted in the GW-signal.
Gravitational-wave cosmology with dark sirens: state of the art and perspectives for 3G detectors
(2022)
A joint fit of the mass and redshift distributions of the population of Binary Black Holes detected with Gravitational-Wave observations can be used to obtain constraints on the Hubble parameter and on deviations from General Relativity in the propagation of Gravitational Waves. We first present applications of this technique to the latest catalog of Gravitational-Wave events, focusing on the comparison of different parametrizations for the source-frame mass distribution of Black Hole Binaries. We find that models with more than one feature are favourite by the data, as suggested by population studies, even when varying the cosmology. Then, we discuss perspectives for the use of this technique with third generation Gravitational-Wave detectors, exploiting the recently developed Fisher information matrix Python code GWFAST.
In this paper an instability calculation is given for an axially symmetric gas distribution which has a differential rotation and in which a magnetic field is present. It is a generalization of similar calculations given by CHANDRASEKHAR and BEL and SCHATZMAN. The generalization becomes necessary for the study of problems of the formation of planetary systems, and star formation.
The instability conditions and the critical wave lengths are calculated for plane-wave-like disturbances. For disturbances running perpendicularly to the axis of rotation instability can occur only if the gas density exceeds a critical value which depends on the differential rotation at the considered distance only as long as pressure gradients and gradients of the magnetic field strength are negligible. If the gas density exceeds this critical value the shortest unstable wave length is proportional to the square root of vT2+vB2, where vT means the velocity of sound and vB the ALFVÉN-velocity.
For disturbances running parallel to the axis of rotation in addition to the JEANS instability a new type of instability occurs due to the simultaneous action of the magnetic field and the differential rotation; for rigid rotation this instability vanishes.
NG2 cells, the fourth type of glia in the mammalian CNS, receive synaptic input from neurons. The function of this innervation is unknown yet. Postsynaptic changes in intracellular Ca2+-concentration ([Ca2+]i) might be a possible consequence. We employed transgenic mice with fluorescently labeled NG2 cells to address this issue. To identify Ca2+-signaling pathways we combined patch-clamp recordings, Ca2+-imaging, mRNA-transcript analysis and focal pressure-application of various substances to identified NG2-cells in acute hippocampal slices. We show that activation of voltage-gated Ca2+-channels, Ca2+-permeable AMPA-receptors, and group I metabotropic glutamate-receptors provoke [Ca2+]i-elevations in NG2 cells. The Ca2+-influx is amplified by Ca2+-induced Ca2+-release. Minimal electrical stimulation of presynaptic neurons caused postsynaptic currents but no somatic [Ca2+]i elevations, suggesting that [Ca2+]i elevations in NG2 cells might be restricted to their processes. Local Ca2+-signaling might provoke transmitter release or changes in cell motility. To identify structural prerequisites for such a scenario, we used electron microscopy, immunostaining, mRNA-transcript analysis, and time lapse imaging. We found that NG2 cells form symmetric and asymmetric synapses with presynaptic neurons and show immunoreactivity for vesicular glutamate transporter 1. The processes are actin-based, contain ezrin but not glial filaments, microtubules or endoplasmic reticulum. Furthermore, we demonstrate that NG2 cell processes in situ are highly motile. Our findings demonstrate that gray matter NG2 cells are endowed with the cellular machinery for two-way communication with neighboring cells.
Nadine Hattom's text is written as a sequel to the artist's 'Shadows' series (2016), comprised of ten digitally altered photographs made from US Department of Defense public-domain images depicting Operation Iraqi Freedom. As Hattom's piece explores migration and landscape, it untangles narratives rooted in the colours, textures, ecosystems, and geographies of the Middle East, but also in the political implications of the author's position in the landscapes of the West.
Herbal hepatotoxicity is a rare and poorly described disease because reported cases are mostly scattered and lack an appropriate causality assessment. We now describe in detail the clinical picture of herbal hepatotoxicity by extracts of Greater Celandine (GC), syn. Chelidonium majus L. from the Papaveraceae family, which contain more than 20 ingredients including various biologically active isoquinoline alkaloids. For this purpose, we analyzed and reviewed published cases of 16 patients from various European countries. In all patients, herbal hepatotoxicity was of probable and highly probable causality for GC, using the original and updated scale of CIOMS (Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences). GC associated hepatotoxicity usually has an acute clinical course exhibiting a hepatocellular pattern of injury and is correlated to an idiosyncratic reaction with its metabolic subtype. Jaundice combined with high values of serum aminotransferases was present in virtually all cases with favourable outcome despite severe clinical course. In conclusion, GC hepatotoxicity is a typical herbal hepatotoxicity with a sound causality track for GC, but there is uncertainty regarding the respective causative compound(s). The present detailed review of GC hepatotoxicity may serve as an example for clinical causality assessments of future cases of liver injury due to other herbs.
Greece: threatening recovery
(2015)
Despite the catastrophic phase between 2008 and the end of 2014, much of a previously unsustainable development has been corrected in Greece and there are clear signs that the deterioration came to a halt in 2014. But what is publicly known about the priorities of the newly elected Syriza government suggests that they may be going largely into the wrong direction.
Climate change is real and is impacting on economies and lives in Africa, especially rural livelihoods. The effects of the climate change phenomena have drawn bitter debate between both the developed and developing countries. To address some of the concerns, the authors identified topics of relevance to Africa, among them: discourses surrounding the green economy and sustainable development; financing green economies; carbon benchmarking; role of multilateral development banks in carbon financing; and carbon taxation. The book mainstreams climate change into 'unfamiliar' territories, such as accounting, fi nance, management, education, economics and banking.
