The article describes the witnesses of three Venetian chronicles of the Houghton Library of the Harvard University in Cambridge (Massachusetts). The paper manuscript Ital. 67, dating to the 16th century, is acephalous and contains a history of Venice from 1106 to the 15th century. The story ends, in fact, by mentioning the noble captain Piero Loredan (1372 - 28 October 1438). The codex belonged to the Ward M. Canaday couple, who donated it to the Houghton library in 1964. The paper manuscript Ital. 178 dates to the XV century (the term post quem is 1417) and contains a history of Venice from the origins to the fifteenth century. It is mutilated in the final part. The codex belonged first to Walter Sneyd (1809-1888), then to Charles William Previté-Orton (1877-1947). It is not possible at the moment to indicate the exact date when the manuscript became part of the collection of the Houghton Library, where it is housed since 1996. The paper manuscript Riant 12 dates to the 17th century and contains a Chronicle of Venice from its foundation until 1432. The codex belonged to Count Paul Edouard Didier Riant (1836-1888) and entered the library of Harvard University in 1899. Keywords Venetian chronicles. Description of manuscripts. Houghton Library of Cambridge (Massachusetts). Ms. Ital. 67. Ital. 178. Riant 12.
The evolution of Critical Theory in the thought of Jürgen Habermas has important consequences for political questions, influencing the actual intellectual debate. This paper examines the main works and studies of Habermas about the epistemology of social sciences, the critique of late capitalist society, the public sphere and democracy, and proposes a comparison with the positions of Jacques Derrida, to have a better comprehension of this evolution.
As an exemplum of that kind of “modern” art, in terms of Adorno, Kafka’s work is marked not only by its strictly “realistic” character, but also by the unavoidable critical and testimonial value of that realism. According to this perspective, both in Adorno and in Benjamin the testimonial aspect of Kafkian writing – that is of a writing as “dialectical image”, as memory of the unfullfilled possibility – it’s all the same not with its symbolical or “epiphanical” aspect but instead with its “allegorical” one.
In this article the author highlights some issues about Adorno’s thought that are fundamental to be acquired in the present age. It focuses on the questions most criticized in the postwar period: cultural industry, managed world, presumed snobbery about mass society, decline of aura, end of individuality, post-individual or pseudo-individuality, ticket mentality. Therefore, the author suggests to explain contemporary age starting from the Adornian model, an important interpretive antecedent to understand new media and the world that they produce. So this article underscores the similarity about many causes for reflection in Theodor W. Adorno and also H. Marcuse: in spite of oustanding differences, both theorists persist on the “power of negative thinking” and on the “feeling of the contrary”. This persistence lays the foundations of critical thought in Adorno, who shows parodying art such as the critical model par excellence. Finally, last pages are directed to remark the importance of Adorno’s thought such as metacritical philosophy, surely more fruitful than the paradigm of the “second generation” in the following decades.
The Adornian theories are still a relevant theoretical and educational model, even fifty years after his death. The article develops exactly this aspect in many directions and it lingers on one of the masterpieces of the master of Frankfurt, Minima moralia, making use of hermeneutic critical thinking.
