This study addresses new trends in translation studies and translation teaching, focusing on the possible use of database applications by translators. The article responds to the increasing market penetration of translation software designed to make the translation process – especially in professional and technical texts – more effective and efficient. The process includes the use of existing translations as a basis for new translations, consistent handling of terminology, simplification of the writing process, and the use of dictionary-type databases. After offering a basic theoretical discussion of CAT tools, the article focuses on their use by translators, especially in terms of how to teach user skills to translation students. The author draws on his experience of teaching the use of CAT tools (the application TRANSITNXT®) at the Department of German Studies, Faculty of Arts, University of Ostrava.
The following paper deals with the phenomenon of religious terminology in fiction. Katharina Beta’s novel Katharsis was analyzed with regard to the translation of the relevant lexical material into Czech language. The theoretical basis for the analysis was provided by works of both Czech and foreign linguists and translatologists.
It has been observed from the intense discussions that the function and importance of translation in foreign language teaching have been going on since the second half of the last century. On the basis of these discussions, it has been understood, from numerous studies carried out about the subject that translation is used as a methodological means of developing language skills in foreign language teaching. Nevertheless, “Common European Framework of Reference for Languages” defines the function of translation in foreign language teaching over again and emphasizes that the translation skill is a “skill” that foreign language teachers should acquire. In spite of this fact, the changes in that subject have not been reflected in German Language Teacher Education Curriculum. Translation is still dealt with in its traditional form as teaching the grammatical rules and vocabulary in German language teaching. However, translation can be used as a multi-sided means which supports developing language skills and communication ability. Thus, with suitable exercises, translation can contribute to the development of the students’ communication skill. In this study, how translation lesson can be organized more effectively and productively in the teaching of German as a foreign language is dealt with by taking the views mentioned above into consideration.
The present study is about note taking techniques in consecutive translation and their application. In the beginning we analyzed in the relevant literature, consecutive interpretation among translation techniques, note taking, and the function and features of note taking in consecutive translation. Afterwards, we presented the problems that an interpreter might face in consecutive interpretation with concrete examples and provided possible methods and techniques to overcome these. Hereby, we emphasized that note taking techniques are an important feature to remember while translating and its function as a memory supporting tool. In the last section we discussed the roles of a consecutive interpreter and emphasized within this context the usage of the earlier mentioned note taking techniques (use of acronyms, signs, and symbols). Moreover we highlighted that each interpreter has to have his/her own techniques and improve these continuously.
