The photoelectron (PE) spectra of dicyano methane and of its dimethyl derivative are tentatively assigned on the basis of a simple MO model. The interactions defined therein between the two cyano groups as well as with the R2C-framework can be parametrized using the PE data. Thus the hyperconjugation πCN/πCR₂ is estimated to amount to 1.7 eV in both compounds. Hyperconjugative effects in methane derivatives H3CX and H2CX2 with X = Br, Cl and CN are compared.
In view of new high-precision experiments in atomic physics it seems necessary to reexamine nonlinear theories of electrodynamics. The precise calculation of electronic and muonic atomic energies has been used to determine the possible size of the upper limit Emax to the electric field strength, which has been assumed to be a parameter. This is opposed to Born's idea of a purely electromagnetic origin of the electron's mass which determines Emax. We find Emax≥1.7×1020 V/cm.
The solvent dependence of the photooxidation of tryptophan and 3,4-benzopyrene in aqueous solutions was studied by quantum yield measurements. When the hydrocarbon is dissolved in aqueous solution of caffeine, the quantum yields indicate a 3,4-benzopyrene photosensitized tryptophan oxidation instead of a photocooxidation, which is indicated in aqueous solution of sodium dodecylsulfate. The same photosensitized oxidation as in caffeine solution is observed, when urea ( 6 m) is added to the soap solution, while the fluorescence and absorption spectra indicate no change in the solvation state of the hydrocarbon, comparable to the change from hydrophobic solubilization by the detergent to dipole — induced dipole complex solubilization by caffeine. It is concluded that the difference in the reaction pathways is caused by different solvation states of the excited or reacting oxygen. In the discussion of the results it is referred to reactions of inhibitors.
The factors responsible for determining the host-plants and feeding sites of aphids, and the various probing activities (the role of the labium, stylet insertion, surface saliva deposition, the behaviour of the aphid, virus transmission) are examined. There is a brief review of stylet structure and movement and the possible sensory nature of these organs, followed by a detailed review of the characteristics of aphid stylet paths in plant tissues. The penetration of epidermis and vascular tissues is treated separately while that within the intermediate tissues is covered in relation to leaves and stems, roots, trees, galls and excised tissue as well as in separate sections on Aphis fabae Scopoli and Myzus persicae (Sulzer). Stylet destinations and behaviour in the sieve tubes are discussed together with general features such as rate and depth of penetration, guidance to the feeding site, effects of tissue hardness and stylet withdrawal. The ingestion rate of plant sap is reviewed and its constitution and importance examined together with the significance of artificial diets. The salivary secretions including sheaths and tracks, their functions and their role in the transference of material between aphid and host are dealt with. The nature of the physical and internal damage resulting from aphid feeding is briefly covered, and also some plant-insect interrelations. The aphid species whose stylets have been examined in plant tissue are listed.
With the mass asymmetry described by the dynamical collective fragmentation coordinate ξ, and with use of the asymmetric two-center shell model, the fission mass distributions for 226Ra, 236U, and 258Fm (which are typical representatives for triple-, double-, and single-humped distributions) are explained.
Bronze age weapons are found in royal lombs and hill fortresses now identified as Indo-Buropean. The diffusion of bronze metallurgy over the Europcan continent follows the routes OE dispercal taken by the Indo-Europeans, whose mobility would account for the rapidity with which the use of bronze supplmted the earlier copper technology.
Singlet oxygen (1Δg) was generated by a microwave discharge and bubbled through a solution of chlorophyll-a in dibutylphtalate at approximately 10-20 torr. It not only excited the dye to its first singlet state but also produced oxidized species which generated a very long lasting weak chemiluminescence. From quenching experiments for the generation of the excited species could computer simulation.
