Many natural minerals exist in the form of a solid solution. The systematic changes in structural and physical properties of oxide solid solutions are of geological importance and allow for wide applications. In order to understand the composition-structureproperty relations, substitutional solid solutions of CuxZn2−xTiO4, ZnxMg1−xTi2O5 and CuxMg1−xTi2O5 have been synthesised by mechanochemical activation assisted solid state synthesis. Self-propagating high-temperature synthesis has been employed to achieve the interstitial solid solutions of Ti5Si3Zx (Z refers to the element boron or oxygen).
The changes in the crystal structure and physical properties due to the formation of solid solutions are investigated by employing X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, low-temperature heat capacity, thermal expansion, scanning electron microscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, plane-wave ultrasound spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations.
The Time Projection Chamber (TPC), a large gaseous detector, is the main particle identification device of the ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC. The desired performance of the TPC defines the requirements for the gas mixture used in the detector. The active volume was filled with either Ne-CO2 (90-10) or Ne-CO2-N2 (90-10-5) during the first LHC running period. For LHC Run 2 the gas mixture is changed to Ar-CO2. Calculations of relevant gas properties are performed for Ar-based gas mixtures and compared to Ne-based gas mixtures to identify the most suitable Ar mixture. The drift velocity of ions in Ar is lower than in Ne. The closing time of the gating grid has to be adjusted accordingly to avoid drift field distortions due to back-drifting ions. The drift times of ions in the TPC readout chambers are calculated for the respective gas mixtures to determine the time to collect all ions from the amplification region. For LHC Run 3 the TPC readout chambers will be upgraded. The Multiwire Proportional Chambers (MWPCs) will be replaced by readout chambers based on Gas Electron Multipliers (GEMs) which are operated in continuous mode. As a consequence an ion backflow of the order of 1% causes significant space-charge distortions in the TPC drift volume. Similar distortions are expected in data taken specifically for the study of space-charge effects at the end of Run 1. The gating grid of the MWPCs is operated in the open state allowing the ions from the amplification region to enter the drift volume. The magnitude of the distortions in this data is measured and compared to the expectations for the TPC upgrade and results from current simulations.
Mitochondrial complex I is a 1MDa membrane protein complex with a central role in aerobic energy metabolism. The bioenergetic core functions are executed by 14 central subunits that are conserved from bacteria to man. Despite recent progress in structure determination, our understanding of the function of the ~30 accessory subunits associated with the mitochondrial complex is still limited. We have investigated the structure of complex I from the aerobic yeast Yarrowia lipolytica by cryo-electron microscopy. Our density map at 7.9Å resolution closely matches the 3.6-3.9Å X-ray structure of the Yarrowia lipolytica complex. However, the cryo-EM map indicated an additional subunit on the side of the matrix arm above the membrane surface, pointing away from the membrane arm. The density, which is not present in any previously described complex I structure and occurs in about 20 % of the particles, was identified as the accessory sulfur transferase subunit ST1. The Yarrowia lipolytica complex I preparation is active in generating H2S from the cysteine derivative 3-mercaptopyruvate, catalyzed by ST1. We thus provide evidence for a link between respiratory complex I and mitochondrial sulfur metabolism.
