- The spontaneous vegetation of the settlements, traffic facilities and waste places of the Wachau was investigated by floristic and plant-sociological methods. "Classic" ruderal plant communities like Arction and Onopordion are rare or fragmentarily developped within these localities. The rich wall vegetation as well as the appearance of thermophilous species and/or plant communities (e.g. Chenopodietum vulvariae) are characteristic for the small towns. The numerous walls and waysides in the landscape are the growing places of Agropyretea, Dauco-Melilotion and Sedo-Scleranthetea communities. The Arrhenatheretum elatioris is the typical vegetation of mown roadsides, while Seseli libanotis stands are characteristic for non-mown slopes. Interesting nitrophilous fringe communities are Chelidonio-Parietarietum officinalis and Heracleo-Sambucetum ebuli. The neighbouring loess area to the east differs considerably from the Wachau by the well developed Sisymbrion communities. Stands of Sisymbrium orientale in hollow ways are of special interest.
