• In der Literaturwissenschaft derdeutschsprachigen Länder intensiviert sich in den 1980er Jahren die Erforschung der Mechanismen des literarischen Kanons, dessen historische Kontexte und sein Status in der Gegenwart. Es gibt einen Konsens in der Ansicht, dass die Bildung des Kanons nicht allein durch das Prisma der ästhetischen Qualität der Werke erklärt werden kann. Im Gegenteil, den Fluchtpunkt derKanon-Diskussion stellt die Überzeugung dar, dass der Kanon vielmehr durch gesellschaftliche Prozesse geregelt wird. Die Modellierung des Kanons auf der Grundlage gesellschaftlicher Prozesse hat verschiedene Facetten (postcolonial, gender, social, discourseanalytic). In vielen Fällen werden textuelle Aspekte nur wenig berücksichtigt, was auch auf die systemtheoretische Literaturwissenschaft im Allgemeinen zutrifft, die ich unter diesem Aspekt beleuchten will. Meine Überlegungen sind demnach systemtheoretisch an Niklas Luhmann orientiert und an den Anwendungen seiner Systemtheorie auf das autopoietische System der Literatur. Die Systemtheorie bietet erklärtermaßen eine gute Möglichkeit, Kommunikation als Prinzip der Selbstorganisation sozialer Systeme zu modellieren. Sie stellt ein Instrumentarium zur Beobachtung von Mechanismen und Prinzipien der Konstruktion sozialer Realität bereit, die sich in Kommunikationsakten manifestieren. Einer systematischen Erforschung von Kanonisierungsprozessen im deutschsprachigen Raum stand bis in die 1980er Jahre die traditionelle Auffassung von Kanon und die daraus abgeleitete Vorstellung im Wege, dass der Kanon immer die wertvollsten Werke erfasst. Seit diese Vorstellung als problematisch erkannt wurde, differenziert sich auch die Kanonforschung im Rahmen der Literaturwertung.
• The research of the mechanisms and components of the literary canon, of its historical context, and its status in the present, was becoming increasingly important in the literary scholarship of German-speaking countries in the 1980s. Nowadays, there is a consensus in view that the formation of the canon cannot be explained solely through the prism of the aesthetic qualities of particular artistic works; on the contrary, the vanishing point of the canon debate is the belief that the canon is governed rather by social processes. The modeling of the canon on the basis of social processes has several facets. In many cases, textual aspects are sufficiently taken into consideration, which also applies to systems theory in the study of literature in general – a point I want to highlight in this aspect. My reflections will develop primarily in the context of the systems theory developed by Niklas Luhmann and its application in the study of literature as an autopoietic system. The systems theory offers the opportunity to model communication as a principle of the self-organization of social systems. It provides a set of tools for observing the mechanisms and principles of the construction of social reality, which is made visible in acts of communication.
